Essex Championships 11-12 May 2002 Basildon
Golden Weekend at Basildon
Havering Mayesbrook athletes were in sparkling form at the weekend as they came away with 48 medals at the two-day Essex Track & Field Championships held at Basildon on Saturday & Sunday. The lion's share went to ladies and girls who again notched up an impressive series of results including four new championship best performances. But Kevin Deacon kept the male flag flying with the only club records of the weekend, with new hammer bests by a junior with both junior and senior weights.
The strong Under 20 ladies squad were in dominant form winning 11 medals, including five gold. Junior International Faye Fullerton was in awesome form as she front ran both 800m and 1500m victories, both in new championship best marks. She was superbly backed up by teammate Lauren Deadman who recorded PBs in the same events on the way to 1500m silver and 800m bronze.
Hannah Gamester also struck double gold with pole vault and long jump wins in this age group, adding 100m bronze for good measure while Sarah Deacon shrugged off a recent injury to win gold and silver, hurling the hammer to a new championship winning best and missing out on discus gold by just 2cms. Francesca Rigby made a successful return after a long break through injury to claim long jump silver while the improving Hayley Mottram recorded a new PB in winning 400m bronze.
The Senior Women and U17 women contributed eight medals apiece. Laurie Cossey notched a double success with 400m & 800m wins, while Claire Brennan made it a hurdles double with gold in the one-lap race and bronze in the sprint (100m) event - the later breaking her four-year old PB. There was no gold this time for Kate Brewington but a busy weekend brought the u23 international multi-eventer four medals, three silver (long jump, high jump & hurdles) and a bronze (200m). Completing the senior medal tally was Corrina Keevil's triple jump silver and Lesley Felton's 800m bronze.
Melanie Harrison was the only under17 to win gold, with a new hammer CBP and PB, but silvers were added by Claire Sargent (80m hurdles), Kirsty Smith (triple jump) and Sara Luck (800m). All were backed up by bronze medals from their teammates. Nicola Schofield won 80m hurdles bronze, 300m hurdles silver, and 300m flat bronze. Lynsey Clark - better known as a discus thrower - triple jumped for the first time and came away with bronze, while Ria Lyons smashed her 800m PB in the heat and ran even faster to place third in the final. Sara Luck also added high jump bronze.
The Under 15 girls contributed seven medals to the club's haul, three of them of the gold variety. Megan Foley took apart a good quality 800m field to come home in front in a new PB, Chloe van Wulven was unpressed as she won the 75m hurdles by four-tenths, while Louise Yard came from behind to claim shot put gold in a new PB, to add to the discus gold she had won at the first day of the championships the week before. In the 100m Cherelle Westlake ran faster than before but was pipped to gold by a late surge from Newham's Kara Graham, as Christina Kalejaiye was a good third. Also claiming bronze was versatile Lauren Clark was set a new high jump PB placing third.
There were meagre pickings for the HMAC males with only Kevin Deacon's junior hammer gold, club record & CBP brightening up the proceedings. For the seniors Kevin Tufton (pole vault) and Scott Spencer (400m) won runners-up medals while Phil Sadler was one place back in the 400m for bronze. Robert Taylor was third in the veterans 100m
Paul Adair showed potential with a medal double in the u13 800m (silver) and 100m (bronze), while Matthew Watkins also won 800m bronze. High Jumpers Mark Connelly (u17) and Steve Prady (Junior men) both leapt to bronze. Andrew Bartlett was the only other male medallist, with a new PB when placing third in the 100m for u17s.
