Essex
Championships
Day
One – Chelmsford 5th May 2003
The Havering Mayesbrook club’s
young athletes reaped a golden harvest at Chelmsford on Sunday, in the first day
of the Essex County Championships coming away with six gold medals and five of
other colours.
Pride of place went to the
middle distance experts who recorded a hat-trick of 1500m victories.
Ashley Reece demolished his
PB to run away with the u15 boys event running 20 secs faster than before in 4m
18.93s, third fastest ever by a club u15 boy and a time likely to rank in the
top 12 nationally. Behind him Ross Clarke was also rewriting his personal record
books as he placed fourth in a new PB of 4m 32.67.
In the equivalent u15 girls
race in this age group Katie Richardson front ran to an unpressed solo victory
in another PB of 4m 52.87s PB, with Lauren Clark sixth in a new PB of 5m
10.32secs.
The under 17 girls race was
a cat and mouse affair with no one prepared to take on the pace until Megan
Foley kicked decisively for home to win comfortably in 4m 45.40s.
Also hitting the gold
standard were Lauren McVicar, who powered to victory in the last 20 metres of
the u15 200m in 27.1 secs after a poor start. Nicola Hill also overcame a poor
start but emerged a clear u13 girls 70m hurdles winner in 12.62s into a stiff
breeze. On the field the only gold came from Lynsey Clark, who went one better
than her silver last year, to spin the u17 discus out to 35.48m, just short of
her day old PB.
Silver service was provided
by Christina Kalejaiye who set a new PB of 26.02s in claiming silver in the u17 200m. Also claiming silver was
Ingrid Deane, who just dipped under 4m in the 1200m u13g, and Louise Yard, who won
the u15 discus, in which Lauren Clark added bronze.
The eleventh and final medal
came from Helen McDonnell who recovered from a near-disaster in the long jump to
place third in the u15g pentathlon with a PB of 2508 points.
Next weekend sees the main
two day championships, also at Chelmsford, and club athletes will be hoping to
bag a hatful of medals.
