Essex Championships Days 2 & 3, 10th & 11th May 2003, Chelmsford
There
was a golden harvest at Chelmsford this weekend at Havering Mayesbrook club
athletes came home with over twenty golds in a fifty medal haul.
| GB u23
international heptathlete Kate Brewington was in fine form, earning a
hat-trick of victories, backed up by two runners-up spots. She smashed
through the 6m barrier in the long jump at last, aided by a stiff
breeze, and for good measure also added the shot title in a new PB
before getting the judges verdict in a competitive 200m race. Silvers came
in the high jump and 100m hurdles, where she gave second best to her
training partner Commonwealth Games finalist Julie Pratt.
Havering Mayesbrook’s middle distance strength meant the 800m events provided a large share of the podium places, with 12 medals, four of each variety. |

Sara Luck and Megan Foley
battled it out for 800m gold in the final event, for u17s. Megan produced an
early challenge on the opening circuit but Sara controlled the race from the
bell and came home in front, just outside her PB, as Megan held on to silver.
Another 800m one-two came in the u15 race as Katie Richardson made it look easy
in a new PB to make it a middle distance double, after winning the metric mile
last week, with Lauren Clark second. Faye Fullerton showed she is back in
business with an 800m / 1500m double in the junior women’s age group with solo
victories in typically front running style, with times close to her best despite
the windy conditions. Hayley Mottram was third in the u20 800m event, as was
Laurie Cossey ho bagged double bronze in the senior women’s 400m and 800m
races. In the youngest age group, u13, Ingrid Deane repeated her ding-dong
battle of the previous week with Newham’s Kathrine Foy and again had to settle
for silver but had the satisfaction of smashing her previous best.
The 800m men were not to be
denied. Ashley Reece was in dominant form with a superb win in the u15 boys,
wiping out his previous best. In the u17 equivalent Andrew Meech held off team
mate Joe Golding to claim bronze, as both lads notched new PBs, breaking their
times set earlier in the heats. Martin
Heys set a new PB in placing third in the men’s u20 race, while in the senior
men’s race club record holder Des English marked his return to club colours
with silver.
On the field Mel Harrison
was a triple medallist with gold in the u20 hammer and shot and discus silvers.
Sarah Deacon bagged a pair of senior medals in hammer and discus. In the men’s
u20 age group Kevin Deacon comfortably defended his hammer title.
In the jumps Mark Connelly
won u20 high jump gold and in the pole vault Kevin Tufton beat dad and coach,
former international Stuart, as the pair picked up gold and silver. Kirsty
Smith was victorious in the u17 triple jump, with Lynsey Clark second, and Emma
Bonny leapt to u17 long jump silver while Helen McDonnell won high jump bronze
in the u15 age group. Hall Mead student James Coppeard won gold in the u15
triple jump and Campion’s Scott Keating went one better in the u17 high jump.
There was a crop of hurdles
medals. Chloe Van Wulven won by a massive seven-tenths margin in the u17 80m
event and in the 75m hurdles for u15s Lisa Schofield won silver in a blanket
finish, running a new PB in the heat despite the headwind. She returned the
following day to win long jump silver in another new PB. Claire Brennan picked
up a pair of senior hurdles medals with bronze in the sprint hurdles and silver
in the one-lap version, in which her younger sister Nina won bronze in the u20
category. Nicola Schofield was third in the u17 300m hurdles.
Veteran walks international
Irene Bateman again won the county 3000m walk title and behind her the trio of
young walkers - Suzanne
Michaliewicz, Alex Winch, and Vicky Winch won in the u17, u15 and u13 age groups
respectively.
Pride of place in the
sprints went to Lucy Sargent’s 100m gold in the u15 age group. Otherwise
sprint medals were hard to come by but the returning Matt Russell did well to
place second in the men’s 200m in a strong field, while Scott Spencer won 400m
bronze. Andrew Bartlett’s impressive 400m form continued with silver in the
u17 one-lap race.
Other distance medals came
from Ryan Prout (senior 500m) and Rob Warner, steeplechase silver.
