Essex Championships Day One – Newham 3rd May 2004
The
teeming rain could not dampen the spirits of the club's youngster who braved the
elements at Newham for the first day of the County Championships today. They
returned with ten medals, three gold, two silver and five bronze and a mass of
PBs.
Lucy
Sargent won by the u17 200m by a massive two seconds. She ran 24.3s to win her
heat in heavy rain, easing down, and was only a fraction slower in the final
three hours later – both bettered her club record.
Megan
Foley retained her u17 title for 1500m, kicking for home on the last lap to win
by 20 metres with Katie Richardson in bronze, for the second week a stride
behind Woodford’s Jessica Sparke.
The
third gold came in the u17 discus as Lauren Clark took gold with a PB effort
while Lauren Newton won silver in the u15 equivalent. There was more discus
delight as Christian Newton won bronze in the u17 men's event. Wins in the
hurdles in a PB time and in the final event the 800m gained an u15 pentathlon
silver for Nicola Hill.
Fit
again Matt Bloy carved an enormous 10 seconds off his 1500m best to win bronze
in the u15 boys final, where he was joined by three club mates, who all set PBs
on the day as Bradley Tungatt was fourth, and behind them Steve McLachlan’s
late charge saw him overhaul Scott Tungatt in the final strides.
Ashley
Reece shaved a few tenths off his 1500m PB when winning u17 bronze as
Southend’s Adam Hickey dominated with a sub-4m clocking. Ross Clarke went out
in the heats.
Frankie
Calder also gained bronze in theu15 girls' 200m running faster than before to
qualify, with the wind a shade over the limit.
Ingrid
Deane, Hayley Thomas and Claire Robinson all smashed PBs on their way to the u15
girls' final and all three almost equalled their heat times when finishing
fourth, seventh and eighth.
