Essex Championships Days 2 & 3, 15th & 16th May 2004, Chelmsford

A strong showing from the ladies squad helped HMAC athletes to 36* medals, 20* of them gold, at  the Essex Championships at Chelmsford this weekend.

The senior women notched up 10 medals - with Kate Brewington contributing five! Kate competed in six of the seven heptathlon events and came away with two golds in the long and high jumps, a javelin silver, and bronzes in the shot and hurdles. But she had to settled for fourth place in a good quality 200m event.

Adding to the senior medal tally were Claire Brennan who held off strong challenge to win 400m hurdles gold, Mel Harrison who took the senior discus, and Lesley Felton who came out on top in the vets 400m. In the senior 400m there was a silver medal for Laurie Cossey, while Sarah Deacon (Hammer) and Hannah Gamester (long jump) also gained runners up gongs.

Mel Harrison also starred in the junior women's 9 medal haul winning the junior discus in a new PB exceeding the 40m barrier for the first time, adding another P for hammer silver, and gaining bronze in the shot. Sara Luck won the 800m in this age group, while Kirsty Smith took triple jump gold and Lynsey Clark added silver in the same competition. Clark also won discus bronze. Nina Brennan ran well for 400m hurdles silver and Danielle Ross smashed her pole vault PB in placing second in that competition.

The u17 women added another seven medals, five of them gold. Lucy Sargent again excelled adding the club u17 and u20 long jump and 100m records to her already impressive CV, and equalling the club senior 100m record for good measure. Her 100m heat time of 11.90s equalled Linda Smith's 21-year-old record and took her into the UK all-time top 30 and she went event faster in taking the gold medal with an 11.75s clocking, aided by a wind above the legal limit.  On Sunday in virtually still conditions she erased Tina Castling's 25 year-old u17 & u20 long jump record when she propelled herself to a superb 5.75m.

Chloe van Wulven was another to take double gold with a season's best 80m hurdles win, and recovering from early failures to win the high jump. Lisa Schofield sliced another four tenths off her hurdles best time in placing fourth.  Alex Winch also claimed gold in the u17 3000m walk. Lauren McVicar took silver in a new PB in the 300m.

Megan Foley and Katie Richardson took part in a high calibre 800m race, with Megan holding on to bronze as a fast finishing Katie smashed her PB by a few seconds.  Lauren Clarke had also set a new PB on her way to a final place.

In the u15 girls events Victoria Winch won gold in the combined 3000m walk while in the somewhat faster-moving 100m sprint Frankie Calder twice bettered her PB and came through for bronze in a tight finish. Ingrid Deane also gained 800m bronze, having carved three seconds off her PB in her heat, as did Hayley Thomas who set a new landmark in qualifying before placing fifth in the final.

Trevor Keys provided the highlight for the senior men, reducing his PB by 17 seconds in a thrilling race to lift the Essex AAA most valuable trophy, the Atlanta Cup, last won by a Havering athlete 29 years ago in 1975. Matt Russell was in superb sprint form running faster than before in placing third in the 100m on Saturday and going one better in the 200m on Sunday. In the junior men's age group Simon Parker gained the only podium place with a 200m bronze, while Andrew Meech improved his PB in his 800m heat.

There were two medals for the u17 men as Joe Forde added four metres to his hammer PB with his gold medal effort, and the improved Davis Nefs smashed his best in winning 400m silver.  Ashley Reece improved his 800m PB in both heat and final but was just out of the medals in a high class race.

The final medal came in the u15 800m as Matt Bloy again bettered his PB, placing third, and he also set a new 400m landmark in his heat, placing fourth in the final. Grant Twist added a new PB in qualifying for the 800m final.
