Essex Championships, Days 4 and 5, Thurrock, Saturday & Sunday 24 & 25 September 2005
|
There was a golden conclusion to the 2005 track & field season as club athletes brought home a clutch of medals from Days 4 & 5 at the Essex Championships held at Thurrock this weekend. Three individual gold were earned on Saturday in the county 3000m champs. Faye Fullerton won the senior women's race in a new PB of 9m 22.7s to slice five seconds off her previous best and Harriet Scott signed off her u20 career with yet another PB, also trimming five secs off her best and dipping under the 10 minute barrier for the first time to win junior gold in 9mm 56.6s. There was a club one-two in the u15 boys' race as Matt Bloy made it a hat trick on county golds, adding the 3000m title to his 800m & 1500m victories in May. He came home in a PB of 9m 43.5s, but did not have things his own way as club colleague Steve McLachlan was not far behind for silver in 9m 45s. On Sunday there was another gold & silver double as Nicola Hill came out on top in the u15 girls' pentathlon with 2684 pts, while Frankie Calder took silver with 2509 pts in her first combined events attempt. The blustery conditions and the less intense competition put paid to another record attempt and Nicola was 60 points short of improving her week old club best. There was also an impressive combined events for the powerfully built Chris Warden in the u15 boys' equivalent. He led for the first four of the five events - winning three of them - the 80m hurdles, shot and long jump. He lined up for the the final events the 800m with a 50 point advantage over Sam Boshell. But the Basildon lad had placed sixth in the previous week's English School's event, largely on the back of his sub 2m 6 sec's 800m effort, and his 2m 11.6 clocking this time won him gold as Chris earned a well-deserved silver medal. There were four relay medals - two silvers and two bronze on Saturday. In the u15 girls events Georgia Davies, Emma Fox and Ingrid Deane won silver in the 3x800m relay and Deane teamed up with Frankie Calder, Nicola Hill and Rachel Kerr for 4x100m bronze. Christina Holland, Amie Adams and Jade Edwards were second in the u17 3x800m event while the u13 boys 4x100m quartet won bronze. |
