Essex Championships Days 2 & 3, 14th & 15th May 2005, Mayesbrook Park

Havering Mayesbrook athletes came away with almost forty medals after two contrasting days of competition in the Essex Championships at Mayesbrook Park on Saturday & Sunday.  Saturday's sprinters and hurdlers had to cope with cold conditions and a strong headwind which took the shine off results, while Sunday dawned bright & sunny with little wind.

Saturday's competition was hot despite the cool breeze and HMAC members racked up 22 medals and a host of PBs. Competitors in the sprint blue riband event the 100m faced some of the fiercest winds as they strove for fast times. Lucy Sargent was majestic as she retained her u17 title on cruise control but her time was over four-tenths down on her championship best set last year. In contrast Luke Stott's unexpected u20 men victory was just one-tenth outside his PB suggesting a fast time is in the offing soon in good conditions. Eugene Ayanful (u17M) and Frankie Calder (U15G) both claimed silver, the latter after careful scrutiny of the photo-finish as little more than the thickness of a vest separated the first three home.

The one-lap sprint also saw happy returns - although no golds. Lauren Clark and Jenny Szantai made it silver & bronze in the u20W 400m, while Luke Stott's second medal of the day in the U20M and Laurie Cossey (SW) also added bronze. In the first of the two-lap finals Matt Bloy won gold in the u15 boys 800m event with a new PB to go third on the club all-time age group lists.

The sprint hurdles on Saturday brought three medals. Nicola Hill demolished a good field in the u15 girls 75m hurdles to set a new PB. She now hopes for calmer conditions in the South of England champs in two weeks to record an English Schools qualifier. Lisa Schofield had to settle for silver as her sluggish start gave her too much to do against rival Nicola Gaisford (Colchester). The third hurdles medal on Saturday came as Richard Demko beat training partner Anthony Williams for the first time this season for an unexpected bronze in the u17M 100m hurdles, while in the senior women's equivalent Claire Brennan won silver.

Saturday's strong wind favoured the jumpers and Kate Brewington leapt to a season's best to win senior long jump gold, while Kirsty Smith retained her u20 triple jump crown. Veteran vaulter Stuart Tufton rolled back the years to win senior pole vault. silver. The throwing events yielded four medals on Saturday with Mel Harrison (SW) and Lynsey Clark (U20W) both spinning the discus out to win silver while Joe Forde (U20M) and Danny Gamester (SM) took silver & bronze in their respective competitions. Kate Brewington added another medal with shot bronze.

Sunday's conditions were everything that Saturday's lacked with a lighter breeze and warm sunshine. The medals were not long in coming as Lisa Schofield atoned for her sprint hurdles defeat by gaining revenge over arch rival Nicola Gaisford in the 300m hurdles event. She did it with some style, not only carving over a second off her previous career best, but slicing over one-tenth off Chloe van Wulven's club record to post one of the fastest times in the UK this season.

The middle distance events produced a rich haul of medals. Katie Richardson put her fall of the previous weekend behind her as she won the u17w 800m event from the front to come home almost 50m ahead to add to the 1500m title she won at Colchester two weeks earlier. Experienced Gavin Maley left his surge to the home straight to kick past the field to win gold in the senior metric mile in a new career best time. Bronze medals also came from Hayley Stibbs in the u20 800m  and Rob Warner who clocked one of his fastest times in the 'chase.

Matt Russell went one better than his 100m silver when he ran a faultless race to win senior 200m gold, a fraction outside his best time while emerging talent Luke Stott made it a junior sprint double with a PB 200m performance. He also added long jump bronze to make it four medals over the weekend. Christina Kalejaiye showed she is approaching her pre-injury best when she ran a superb bend and held on for bronze in the u20w 200m final.  Matt Bloy added u15 400m bronze to his 800m gold when he set a new PB in the last event of the championships.

On the field a mini-tornado played havoc with the pole vault beds which took flight, causing the start of the event to be delayed. But this did not put Hannah Gamester off her stride as she equalled her senior club best to win gold, while Danielle Ross mastered her new pole to win u20 silver.  Kate Brewington added to her medal tally with high jump gold, Bonne Buwembo was victorious in the u17 javelin and Sarah Deacon was second in the senior hammer.

There was a great competition in the u17 triple jump as Anthony Williams and Nat Senior traded places and set new PBs. Senior's new PB spurred on Williams who added half a metre to his pre-competition best to win bronze. And another break through came in the u15 girls long jump as hurdle victor Nicola Hill added bronze with a new PB.

The competition clearly brought out the best of those present as the rich harvest of new career best shows. The u15s, u17s and u20s next face major competition at Portsmouth over the Whit Bank Holiday when the South of England age group championships take place.
