Essex Championships Day One – Ilford Monday 1st May 2006

There was a golden finale to Day 1 of the Essex Champs at windswept Ilford on Monday as Frankie Calder & Eugene Ayanful both struck gold in the final track finals, the U17 200s. Frankie impressed throughout after heat and semi final victories. She shrugged off a strong early challenge of Basildon's Kirsty Shepherd to power home with a 26.69s clocking into a stiff headwind. Nicola Hill ran well for fourth. In the boys' equivalent Eugene literally ran away to win, finishing almost seven-tenths of a second ahead of the opposition in a fast 22.71s, again into a strong headwind. There were another two gold medals in the U15 throwing events as Kike Oniwinde in the javelin (25.99m) and Jessica Humpheryes in the discus (27.99m) both dominated their competitions. In a strong HMAC showing Becky Luck was second second in the discus in a new PB, with Sam Hill 4th and Katherine Knight in the top 8. In the javelin Sidnie Sales (4th), Humpheryes (5th) and Hill (7th) all threw well. One of the best races of the day was in the U13 girls 1200m. From the gun it was a three-way battle between HMAC's Eleanor Bounds and Rebecca O'Neill and Thurrock's Jessica Judd. I was only after the trio passed the bell at 800m in around 2m 40m that Judd struck for home and although Eleanor gave chase she was unable to rein her in, finishing in just under four minutes to go fifth on the club all-time list, as Rebecca O'Neill's strong run earned her bronze medal and a PB of 4m 01.35, for sixth best club all-time. There were five other medals for club athletes. Ben Western was close to his day-old best when winning U13 long jump silver (4.46m) and was 6th in the high jumo and 5th in the 200m. Sophie Baggs again improved her high jump PB for the third time in eight days clearing 1.30m for U13 bronze, and 10th all-time by a club u13. Catrina McAuliffe also won U17 discus bronze with a season's best (27.98m), as did Georgie-Lou Sales in the U17 javelin (26m?). On the track Ingrid Deane had her best run for some time to finish third in the U17 women's 1500m, and Matt Bloy was close to his recent best when finishing fourth in a fast-run u17 Men's 1500m. The main Essex Championship events take place on 13th & 14th May at Chelmsford.
