Essex Championships Days 2 & 3, 12th & 13th May 2007, Chelmsford

The main action in the county champs was also marred by poor conditions as strong winds and heavy showers made the going tough on Saturday while  there was persistent rain throughout Sunday’s action.  But club athletes hit the gold standard time & time again and rattled up over 40 podium places.

International heptathlete Kate Brewington showed good form in winning three county titles. On Saturday she was close to her best with a legal 6.03m long jump victory before battling the headwinds to win the 100m hurdles and gaining shot put bronze. She returned on Sunday to add a third gold in the high jump and was close to her javelin PB in placing fourth in that event. She now contests her first heptathlon for almost two years at Woodford this Saturday.

The javelin produced the usual crop of good results. Bonne Buwembo was close to his best in winning the U20 men’s competition and two more golds came from Georgie Bean in the U17Men category and Bradley Burr’s winning PB in the U15 Boys. There was a remarkable victory for Louise Mathews who won the senior women’s event off a shortened run, just weeks after a knee operation.  Emma Christmas claimed silver in the U20 competition.

There were ten hurdles medals to add to Kate Brewington’s senior victory. Nicola Hill defended her U17 80m hurdles title with a PB performance on Saturday and doubled up with a 300m hurdles victory on Sunday. But she missed out in a quality long jump competition, finishing fourth, despite registering a season’s best. Lisa Schofield also picked up a pair of medals. She was close to victory in Saturday’s sprint hurdles race, losing out after clattering the eighth flight, but made no mistake the next day in the one-lap event, coming from behind to claim victory, lopping over two and a half seconds off her career best in the process. David Creedon picked up a of  bronze medals in the U17 hurdles equivalents, registering two PBs, with Chris Warden winning silver in the U17M 400m hurdles ahead of him. Claire Brennan added yet another hurdles medal to her impressive career tally in the senior 100mH race, Laura Bealey set a PB  in winning silver in the senior 400m hurdles race and Anthony Williams added a third silver in the U20 men’s race.

Williams was also in the thick of good jumps returns for club athletes, with triple jump silver and long jump bronze, while Vince Lazaro won the latter competition and was third in the triple jump. Joseph Ramie won long jump bronze in the U17s,as did Bethan Siddons in the U17 high jump, while Nicole Dalton went one better with silver in her first U15 triple jump competition.

Matt Russell shaded gold in the senior 100m event but was well ahead in the 200m, and Lucy Sargent similarly picked up a sprint double in the U20 women’s race. Fred Mokoso added 100m bronze to his 200m medal gained at last week’s Day One. Lauren Clark and Becky Owen won silver and bronze in the U20 400m race.

The middle distance races as usual produced a rich medal harvest. Rob Warner dominated the steeplechase to defend his title and U20 Ross Clarke returned to club colours with an impressive runners-up spot in the senior 5000m competition.

Race of the weekend was the senior women's 1500m which saw the first three smash the 22 year old championship record as Harriet Scott sliced 8 secs off her PB in a fast run race, just behind Alexa Joel (awaiting clearance to compete for HMAC). Harriet added a second PB and a silver medal in Sunday’s 800m.  Eleanor Bounds and Rebecca O’Neill both had to improve their 800m PBs to claim u15 silver & bronze, while Zoey Littlechild’s late charge gained bronze in the U17 equivalent and Robyn Matson ran close to her fastest 1500m time to win U20 bronze.

The club medal tally was completed in the throws as Sam Hill won U15 shot bronze, Mel Harrison was also third in the senior discus, as was Danny Gamester in the senior men’s hammer.
