Essex Championships Days 2 & 3, 9th & 10th May 2009, Chelmsford

A fine blend of youth and experience brought glut of medals and podium places as the main two-day Essex Championships event concluded at sunny Chelmsford on Sunday.

Veterans Mat Bland and Mark Bishop both struck gold in the oldest category. Bland shrugged off an early challenge to defend his veterans 1500m title while club president Bishop showed a glimpse of his old form as he powered to 400m victory

At the other end of the age groups both Alex Law and Freddy Keefe added to their titles from Day 1 last week.  Alex Law made it four U13 boys titles, adding the 100m to his earlier hurdles, discus and 200m golds while Freddy Keefe again front run to another PB as he added the two-lap 800 crown to his 1500 title, clocking the fifth fastest ever by a club u13.

The senior women were in superb form great form with four golds, four silvers and two bronze. Lucy Sargent and Harriet Scoot both bagged two medals. After being edged out of the shorter sprint on Saturday Lucy excelled in Sunday’s 200m final to win in her fastest time for two years. Harriet also bounced back from Saturday’s 1500m silver to dominate Sunday’s 800m to show she has now recovered well from injury. There was a clean sweep in the pole vault as the Stuart Tufton coached trio of Karen Baldwin, Danielle Ross & Leanne Blaney were 1-2-3.  Mel Harrison won her first county title for a few years in the discus and took shot bronze while silver service was provided by Claire Brennan (100H), Laura Bealey (400mH) and Emma Christmas (Javelin).

Jack Edgar-Hill won both U17 Men’s hurdles events in PB times and Brad Burr (JT) and Laurence Goodacre (SP) also won titles in this age group, as Jon Seekings added 400mH silver.

The U20 Men added half a dozen medals, two of each colour. Adam McCarthy was a fine winner of the 400m Hurdles and Joe Ramie’s triple jump PB sealed gold to add to his long jump silver. Georgie Bean was runner up in the javelin and Andy Lewis dipped under 50 secs for the first time to win 400m bronze.  Emmanuel Quarshie’s shot PB brought him bronze.

The U20 Women also added six medals. Nicola Hill won Saturday’s sprint hurdles and on Sunday trimmed a second off her 400m hurdles best with 61.32s but had to settle for silver as Lauren Bouchard (Chelmsford) ran the U20 UK lead time this year.  Angela James won the javelin and high jump bronze, while silver and bronze went to Lauren Edgar-Hill (100mH) and Amy Cox (HT).

Ellie Bounds dominated the U17 Women’s 800 final just as she had the 1500 the week before and her winning time of 2:14.60s was over three seconds faster than her previous best. Katherine Knight got the better of Sophie Baggs as they won discus silver & bronze, while Holly Thomas produced another great result to win 80m Hurdles bronze.

Henrietta Adewole was the only club medallist for the U15 girls with a winning shot PB, and Ashley Purnell’s long jump silver was the U15 boys’ only podium place.  .
