Club athletes defied cold, windy and often wet conditions to post some fine results and come home with a clutch of medals at this weekend’s Essex Championships at Chelmsford. 

The hurdles events produced a rich crop of six golds, one silver and four bronze medals. Sprint hurdles golds were won by Holly Thomas and Josh Olawore in both Under 17 events while in the one-lap hurdles races club athletes won four of the five golds as Isaac Ogunlade and Jon Seekings were victorious in the U20 & U17 400m hurdles events while Felicity Clarke and Claire Brennan claimed gold in the under 20 and senior women’s races.  Ogunlade added silver in the u20 sprint hurdles with Jack Edgar-Hill third, with Adam McCarthy snatching bronze in the u20 400m hurdles. Nicola Peachey smashed her PB in both heat & final for bronze in the U17 300m hurdles event. Chloe van Wulven was third in the women’s sprint hurdles.

The throws once again were also a happy hunting ground with eleven podium places. Georgie Taylor and Rachel Forder continued their dominance of the U15 throws adding shot gold and silver to last week’s discus and javelin medals.  Bradley Burr won the u20 javelin with Georgie Bean returned to action in third, while Sam Harrison was also third in the senior competition. Kike Oniwinde had to settle for u20 javelin silver and Sophie Baggs and Annie Adewole were also runners up in the U17 discus and shot respectively.  U17 men’s bronze throws medals went to Ashley Purnell in the javelin and Andrew Kerr (hammer) and Laurence Goodacre was third in the U20 discus.

Mat Bland was a comfortable winner of the veterans 1500m for the fourth year running, with Paul Berrett third, and Alexa Joel returned from injury for gold in the senior women’s 1500m event. Lydia Hallam’s fine 800m PB brought her a deserved u15 bronze.

Mark Bishop took the veteran’s 100m crown but Hannah Connor’s senior 100m bronze was the only other medal in the sprint events.
