Club youngsters got the county championships off to a very successful start with 14 medals – including five gold – at Basildon on Monday Alex Law was a class apart in the U15 boys’ pentathlon smashing the county championship record that had stood since 1993 by almost 200 points, to go top of the UK rankings with his 2938 points tally, a new club record. He did not put a foot wrong setting a new personal best of 11.45s in the opening hurdles event, the second fastest in club history, winning the shot in a new PB of 11.41m, leaping to a new club long jump U15 best of 6.22m, equalling his high jump best of 1.72m and completing a clean sweep of PBs with a 800m clocking of 2:23.38s. Georgie Taylor was dominant in the Under 15 throws with double gold in both discus & javelin, with Rachel Forder adding discus silver and javelin bronze. John Nelson came home with two Under 13 medals winning the javelin and was runner up in the discus. More throws success came from Freya Gutteridge & Kiera Law who were second & third in the U13 discus, Deborah Knight who won silver in the U17 javelin, and Dan Wilson also won silver in the U17 men’s discus. Lydia Hallam was a fine winner in the U15 girls 1500m, battling against the strong winds to kick clear on the last lap for victory, and Hoseah Gikungu added U17 men’s 1500m silver. The medal roll was completed by Michelle Hughes who won bronze in the U15 girls pentathlon, adding PBs in hurdles and shot.
