Essex Championships Days 2 & 3, 12th & 13th May 2012 Chelmsford

Warm but breezy conditions made for a welcome break from the recent wet & windy weather and produced a fine crop of results and over 30 medals at the main two-day Essex Championships at Chelmsford.

The Under 17 Women produced the largest medal haul with nine, with over half going to Georgie Taylor & Rachel Forder.  On Saturday Georgie moved closer to the club U17 discus record with her winning 41.43m effort and Rachel added a metre and a half to her previous best with 38.08m for silver; Ella Rudgeley made it a clean sweep in third. On Sunday it was Rachel who took the honours heaving the shot 10.39m for third best on the club U17 list with Georgie 9.70m PB lifting silver. Georgie also added hammer bronze. Lydia Hallam added 800m gold and 1500m bronze and Isabella Woods' 300m bronze completed the U17 medal roll.

The Under 15 girls came home with nine medals. Michelle Hughes won a hat-trick of podium places. She took gold in the 75m hurdles in the last stride as her lunge for the line got the judges verdict in a photo finish, and also added silver in both 300m & high jump. Modupe Shokunbi was an impressive winner of the 100m clocking a new best of 12.67s on her way to victory but had to settle for silver in Sunday's 200m. Chenice Constable led throughout the long jump but was pipped for gold in the last round, and also earned high jump bronze while Gemma Archer-Haley (3000m) and Chioma Abazie (shot) also took bronze.

There were two medals in the youngest age group the Under 13 girls as Rebecca Brown smashed her previous best for silver and Sophie Taylor also set a new PB to win shot bronze.

Josh Olawore's victory in the Under 20 men's long jump was never in doubt as he took control in the first round and he ended in style with a 7.02m last round winning effort. Jon Seekings' PB earned him 400m hurdles silver in this age group and there was a pair of bronze medals in the 400m & discus for Danny Wilson and a long jump silver for Richard Holland.

In the Under 17 men's championships George Hadler was unpressed in winning gold and Alex Law's massive 6.75m long jump opener put the competition out of reach of his opponents. Lee Jarrold's 1.70m high jump clearance won silver.  Tom Pitkin's 300m PB brought him bronze - the only medal for the Under 15 boys.

Three more golds came from the senior ranks. Veteran skipper Mark Bishop dived for the line to preserve his lead to take the veteran's 300m title but he crashing fall snapped his collarbone & he was whisked off to hospital and missed out on his medal ceremony.  Jeremy Watson returned to form to lift the senior men's high jump trophy with 1.85m clearance and Laurence Goodacre returned to normal surroundings after his recent competition in the Olympic Stadium to take shot bronze.

Kate Cowley vaulted her highest ever outdoors and also set a championship best to lift the senior high jump pole vault title with 3.70m but was disappointed not to go higher. Claire Brennan's 400m hurdles season's best which won silver was one of her fastest ever runs and Ellie Watson added triple jump bronze.

Debbie Knight, competing for the first time since breaking bones in her foot, added over two metres to her previous best to win the junior javelin, while Laura Drew's discus PB won bronze to complete the 36 medal haul.
