Essex Championships Days 2 & 3, 25th & 26th May 2013 Chelmsford

Excellent warm conditions brought out a fine crop of medals and personal best as the two day Essex Championships took place at Chelmsford this weekend.

The Under 17 women led the way with five golds and four silver medals. Michelle Hughes won two golds and a silver, to add to her silver from Day 1. She smashed her 80m hurdles best to qualify for the final and went even faster to win gold in the fastest time by an U17 this summer, as her two main rivals crashed out. Another PB in the 100m brought silver and on Sunday Michelle added the 300m hurdles title in another career best.  Georgie Taylor defended her title and erased the 29 year old championship best, with Rachel Forder in silver, and Georgie returned to add shot gold. Lydia Hallam was another double medallist, taking silver in Saturday's 3000m and adding 800m runners up gong the next day. Mercy Gutteridge completed the U17 honours board with pole vault gold.

There were eight medals for the Under 20 Men, with the hurdlers leading the way.  On Saturday Robbie Clarricoats just edged out George Hadler to claim silver, with George winning bronze and on Sunday  George made no mistake in his 400m hurdles speciality with Robbie coming through for bronze. Josh Olawore won the long jump gold while Massi Dendani ran strongly for silvers in both the 800m & 1500m, the latter in a new PB. Pat Lear was javelin runner up in this age group.

Modupe Shokunbi dominated the Under 15 girls 100m, to add the shorter sprint to her 200m title from Day One. Her wind-aided winning time was not only the fastest time ever by a club U15 Girl, it was also the fastest in Britain this year. Katie Dawson added high jump bronze in this age group.

Rebecca Brown won a competitive Under 13 girls 800m to defend her title and in the process carved a massive 10 seconds off her best and jump into the all-time top 5 in this event.  In the Under 13 boys age group Jairzinho Morris came close to adding 100m gold to his Day 1 200m title but had to settle for silver and a new PB.

The Under 15 boys 800m final saw Ben Ellis come close to gold but a bump from the eventual winner on the final bend pushed him back into silver but with the consolation of a new PB. There were two bronze medals in this age group as personal best from Matt Owers (80m hurdles) and John Nelson (javelin) secured podium places.

Tom Pitkin was a double medallist in the Under 17 Men's age group winning the 400m hurdles title after sealing bronze in the flat equivalent while Ed Thompson won another gold in the pole vault.

There were fewer club athletes in action in the other categories but some good performances.  Emma Christmas won senior women's javelin gold while Debbie Knight saw the Under 20 women's gold medal slip away as a final round throw from Newham's Demi Broomfield took the title with Debbie second.  Javelin coach Sam Harrison also got on the podium with silver in the senior javelin and Jack Edgar-Hill's second race at the senior 110m hurdles brought him silver and a new PB while Emmanuel Quarshie's shot PB earned senior bronze. Steve Rand's 1500m PB saw him take silver in the veteran's 1500m.
