Havering athletes racked up a 60+ medal haul at this weekend's Essex Championships including two club records and a championship best performance.

Max Law once again provided the stand out performance, adding eight metres to his Championship best from last year , to improve his recent club record and exceed the UK qualifying standard for this summer's European Under 18 Championships on his 16th birthday. It was one of many fine throws results for club athletes. More javelin success came from Bradley James and Oliver Yexley who won gold & bronze in the U15 boys' event, bronzes for Peter Brinton-Quinn in the U17 event, and Georgia Yexley in the Under 13 girls, while Matthew Page & Teddy Matthews added Under 13 javelin silver and bronze. The Under 15 girls discus produced a clean sweep of the medals as Alice Brown, Freya Killilea and Hannah Yexley finished 1-2-3, Katie Ennis added Under 13 discus gold (& Hammer silver) and Matthew Davies Under 13 boys' bronze medals in both discus and shot. Shot medals went to Lola Kuponiyi who won Under 15 gold, Chimdi Okpalauko who added Under 20 shot gold to her discus gold, with Elysha Thatcher-Gray in bronze, and Laurence Goodacre with senior bronze.

Jumps success came as Freya Higginbottom and Shandell Taylor added Under 15 & Under 20 long jump golds, and the rapidly improving Jessie Collier added 30 cms to her week old best to win Under 15 pole vault, and close the gap to the club record to 3 cms. Claire Brennan added senior vault silver and versatile Stephanie Okoro added Under 13 long jump silver to her 800m silver medal and Olivia Sorrell was an U15 high jump silver medallist.

There were good hurdles results on Saturday morning despite the strong headwind. Dominic Alexandru's gold medal winning performance was the fastest in the UK this year and improved the club 75m hurdles record. Toby Bishop's career best earned him silver and an English Schools qualifying standard in the Under 15 boys' event, but he strained a hamstring in doing so, while Ruby Mace's season's best brought her Under 15 girls' hurdles silver. Karl Tucker won senior sprint hurdles silver and Kieran Riddell won silver in the Under men's 400m hurdles.

The sprints medal tally was the club's best in recent years. Poppy Ellis improved her best in heat and final for a dominant Under 17 300m gold, Lewis Bailey won senior 200m silver after sharing 100m bronze with club mate Ayo Akingbehin, with Steve Rand third in a close finish in the vets 300m. Bella Smith narrowly lost out on Under 15 gold in both 100m & 200m, as the photo finish showed her 0.03 & 0.01 seconds respectively short of victory. Freya Higginbottom added 200m bronze, Jade Kavanagh won Under 17 200m bronze and Daniel Lammas won Under 13 boys' 200m bronze.

The middle distance events brought a rich medal harvest for club athletes. The 3000m races brought club athletes four golds and four other medals. Kate O'Neill and Sophie Rand were one-two in the Under 20 race in Saturday's blustery conditions with Sam Atkins second in the Under 20 men's race, with five more 3000m medals following on Sunday as Molly Sweetman added Under 17 gold, Sydney Foley & Chloe Rand won Under 15 gold & bronze, as did Under 15 boys Alex Ford & Shane Hart.  In the senior 5000m races Ginte Bailey and Rob Warner were both runners-up, after Warner had won steeplechase gold, while Sam Atkins added Under 20 'chase silver. The 1500m races brought Kate O'Neill another silver, and Natalie Sewell (Under 15s) and Ruby Higgins (Under 13) matched this podium place, with Ben Davis (U20) and Matthew Blacklock (U15) winning 1500m bronze. Alice Brown's solo front running 800m victory was the second fastest in the UK this year and fifth on the club all-time U15 lists. Finn Hutton won senior 800m silver and Alex Friend's first sub-two minute clocking won Under 17 bronze. Under 13 brothers Sebastian & Dominic Alexandru added gold & silver in the Under 13 1000m walk to complete the club 60+ medal tally.
