Essex Cross Country League, Hylands Park, Chelmsford, 13 October 2001

Warm and sunny weather greeted the start of the cross-country season at Hylands Park on Saturday as the Havering Mayesbrook young athletes heralded a successful winter campaign with some impressive results.

Middle distance prospect Ashley Reece, fresh from his recent victory in the South of England Road Relays at Aldershot, led from start to finish in the Under 13 event to win his first cross country for the club. There was a clean sweep of the placings as Mathew Watkins battled all the way to the finish line to just hold off team-mate Ross Clarke, who made a good comeback from injury, for 2nd and 3rd place respectively, both runners being given the same time. Completing the team in his first run for the club in an excellent 6th place was Paul Adare, making it four in the first six, giving the Havering Mayesbrook athletes an easy win in the team event.

Team success also came in the girls under 13 and 15 events. Sara Luck cruised home to clinch the under 15 event with Megan Foley making it a one-two for the club. Robyn Matson placed fifth and Vicky Smith 10th to complete the winning foursome, with seven other club athletes also coming home in this age group. There was a thrilling race in the under 13 event as Havering Mayesbrook’s Katie Richardson emerged victorious from a neck and neck contest with Colchester’s Charlotte Taylor, with Lauren Clark in fourth, Rebecca Heath in 10th and Hayley Thomas 16th completing the winning team; six other club athletes completed the course.

The under 15 boys packed well to place third, with Ashley Roberts in 12th best placed. There were good placings in the under 17 races, with Rob Howe finishing fifth in the boys event and Ria Lyons seventh in the girls race. Hayley Hawes was highest placed for the senior ladies in ninth with Lesley Felton twelfth, while Matt Bland in 15th was first home in the men’s race, with the team placing third.
