Essex Cross Country League, Stubbers, 11
October 2003
The
weather was warm, the course was dry but it was the first round of the Essex
cross country league at Stubbers and despite
the lack of mud or rain the winter season was well and truly underway.
Although lacking some big names the Havering Mayesbrook contingent showed a
range of class and true team spirit and look set for another successful
campaign. Overall there were 464 finishers in the eight events - over
a third of them in the senior men's race - as Havering Mayesbrook as usual
ensured a warm welcome for their visitors.
The first race to start the day was the under 13 girls, Ingrid Deane showed the
same class she showed on the track to win the race (time 14.23), next in also
showing true form was Michaela Roberts in a well run 4th spot (time 14.40).
Georgia Davis on her first race for the club came home in a strong 17th place
(time 16.30), with Rachael Kerr completing the scoring four in in a well earned
35th (time 18.45) to place the team 3rd place.
The u13 boys also built on their excellent track form to record a runaway win in the team stakes. Grant Twist was an early leader but Steve McLachlan attacked in the last kilometre and went on to win, with Grant having to settle for third. With Matt Bloy in close order in fourth and newcomer Danny Walker 12th the team were convincing winners with just 20 points. Nine other athletes from the host club competed as Joe Webster and James Stewart both made the top 20 in a 50+ field.
The under 15 girls showed the same spirit as the under 13. Clare Robinson showed that she is ready for the cross country season by coming home in a well run 7th (time 17.21), Hayley Thomas also put in a fine run coming home in 9th (time 17.30). Next across the line was debutante Jade Edwards in 13th (time 18.09), and Rachael Newman dug in hard and crossed the line in 16th (time 18.30). The team finished in a overall 3rd place with 45 points, 5 points behind 2nd place Southend with 40 points and Basildon won with 22 points. Also running well and finishing in 24th (time 19.31) was Alex Watkins, with Lauren Newton was 30th (time 22.24).
The u15 boys, although without Ashley Reece and Ross Clarke, performed well to claim second. Twins Brad and Scott Tungatt stepped up an age group and did well to place fifth and sixth, and were well supported by Paul Adair in 10th and Chris McLachlan in 16th completing the scoring four who secured runners-up spot.
The under 17 ladies also finished as overall 3rd team with 62 points behind
Chelmsford with 47 points and winners Basildon with 38 points. Robyn Matson ran
strongly throughout the race and it paid off bringing her home in 6th place
(time 25.12), Natalie Adams also showed good pace coming home in 10th (time
25.45), Helen Roche ran well and dug in hard after getting a
stitch half way into the race she finished 14th (time 26.55). Completing the
team was Laura Moore who showed great form running well coming home in 19th
(time 28.45). Caroline Smith and Danielle Ross showed great team spirit both
running the whole course together both of them crossed the line in the same time
of 33.34 placing 23rd #& 24th respectively.
In contrast with just two competitors the u17 boys were ranked sixth as Michael Parperis (22nd) and Christian Newton (27th) flew the flag alone.
Faye Fullerton was an impressive winner of the Senior women's race, run in conjunction with the u17 boys' event, winning by a large margin. She was supported well by her team mates with Laurie Cossey (11th) with Nikki Barnett returning from injury and looking strong as she came through in the latter stages for 13th, with Lesley Felton's 22nd place completing the scoring four, who finished 8 points behind Chelmsford.
There was an excellent turn out in the senior men's race with 13 starters from the host club. Trevor Keys was prominent throughout and held on for 9th in a massive 162 finishers. Rob Warner (29th), Gavin Maley (32nd) and Chris Coates (34th) were all in close order, while Neill Collins faded in the latter stages to 42nd, after an aggressive opening lap, with Graham Pritchard two places behind him as the team wound up fifth in a tight finish.
