Essex Cross Country League, One Tree Hill,
Corringham, 25
October 2003
The temperature may have dropped considerably since the first round races at Stubbers two weeks earlier but the going was still hard underfoot for the second round Essex League races, and several athletes found it difficult to keep their footing.
In the first race of the day for the under 13 girls, first round winner Ingrid Deane again showed her class but this time had to settle for runners-up spot, six seconds behind the winner. Rebecca Luck had a super run to be the club's second scorer in 7th place, while behind her Louise Wood dug in well for 20th, with Georgia Davis, running well one place back in 21st, completed the scoring four, the team placing third. Rachael Kerr (31st), Ciara Gillespie (35th) and Louisa Newman (37th) also finished.
The u13 boys again dominated the age group. Grant Twist again set the pace and held his lead until the final few metres when teammate Steve MacLachlan came past for victory for a Havering Mayesbrook one-two. With Matt Bloy again close up in fourth and Danny Walker 11th the team won by a massive margin with just 18 points. The club's dominance was confirmed with 11 other finishers, and top twenty finishes by Joe Webster (13th), Jamie Harrington (15th) and Daniel Winters (20th).
The under 15 girls built on the good form of the u13s to win the age group. Katie Richardson looks like she can cope with everything the cross country season throws at her and was a good winner. Lauren Clark put everything into her race and passed athletes over the final 50m to place 7th. Clare Robinson continued her good form in 10th, while Hayley Thomas placed 12th to confirm the team's victory with 30 points. Also in action were Rachael Newman (22nd) and Lauren Newton (35th).
Once again the u15 boys had a depleted team led by the Tungatt twins, both first years in the age group. Bradley repeated his fifth place from Stubbers but brother Scott unfortunately fell twice and battled on bravely for 22nd. Chris MacLachlan showed improved form in 18th while Liam Gildea gained a vital 27th placing to place the team 3rd.
The under 17 ladies showed the importance of having a full team in this age group as they took the team stakes when the opposition failed to field complete foursomes. Sara Luck ran well from start to finish for second place with Robyn Matson continues to get better finishing fourth u17 and 8th overall in the combined u17 & u20 event. Helen Roche ran a super race for 13th and Laura Moore completed the scorers in 19th. Robyn Delivett and Jenny Szantai also ran to confirm HMAC's strength in this age group.
The u17 boys were again short of a full squad but manage to place fourth. Andrew Meech found his first race this winter heavy going in 11th followed by Andrew Luck (23rd) and Christian Newton (27th) .
In the senior women's race Laurie Cossey
There was an excellent team spirit with 12 finishers and improved results in the senior men's event. Trevor Keys was unable to match his top ten finish in round one but was again first clubman in 16th, with Gavin Maley (19th) and Chris Coates (23rd) both gained much higher places. Rob Warner and Graham Pritchard both made the top 30 in 24th and 28th while Rob Dickenson completed the six to score in 41st, as the team went one better than last time with fourth.
