Essex Cross Country League, Round 3, Basildon 1 November 2003

With the heavy rain during the week making conditions at the hilly Gloucester park, Basildon course, Havering U13's continued to dominate the Essex Cross Country League.

Ingrid Deane was runner up in the u13 girls' race for the second consecutive week, and good packing by Michaela Roberts (13th), Rebecca Luck (14th) and Louise Woods (21st) again ensured a top three team finish.

In the under 13 boys' race Grant Twist once again tried to run away from the front but was caught by Steve Maclachlan once again. Steve has now made an impressive start to the season winning all 3 races in dominant fashion, with Grant just behind on each occasion. Matt Bloy continues to try and get closer and held 3rd position until the final hill but lost two places on the run in the finish 5th. Danny Walker continues to improve and managed 7th to close the team with an unbeatable score of 15 points. The club had nine other finishers and look set for another excellent season.

Katie Richardson made it two out of two as she repeated last week's convincing win in the u15 girls' event. Strong performances by Lauren Clark (7th), Clare Robinson (8th) and Hayley Thomas (13th) saw the team hold off a good challenge from Basildon to win the team stakes again.

U15 Boys' With Ashley Reece and Matthew Watkins making their first starts of the season hopes were high for a good team position. Ashley dominated the race from the start and stormed away from previously unbeaten Paul Bumstead on the last hill to win by over 20 seconds. With Matthew Watkins enjoying a solid 4th place, Bradley Tungatt making it a third 5th place in a row and brother Scott closing the team in 7th, the U15's gained their first team victory of the season with 17 points.

U17/U20 Women  Sara Luck faced tougher opposition this time out but still ran well for fourth. With seven other team members the club were always in the hunt in the team prizes as an improved Helen Roche made the top ten, beating training partner Robyn Matson who was two places adrift, and newcomer Donna Dryhurst placed 21st to complete the scoring four.

U17 Men: Unfortunately only three boys made the start line, with David Nefs running well in his first Cross Country of the season to lead the team home in 13th place, followed by Paul Andrews in 14th and Christian Newton in 17th for 3rd Team place.

Senior women: The already depleted ladies were further affected after Laurie Cossey's late withdrawal with a cold but Lesley Felton rose to the occasion to gain her highest placing this winter with ninth, and Ellie Mole, Linda Smith and Julie Gildea completed the team.

Senior men: After last week's good result, holidays, work and illness devastated the senior men's team this week, having to rely on a gutsy run by veteran Mike Munson to complete the scoring team. The others all improved on their previous week's performance with Trevor Keys again first home in 14th.
