Essex Cross Country League, Loughton, 8
October 2005
|
The mild conditions attracted
bumper turn outs from HMAC athletes in most events, as the cross country
season got off to a warm start at the first round of the Essex League,
held on the undulating and unfamiliar Loughton course.

| There were two team wins and
three team runners-up placings. The powerful under
15 boys picked up where they left off last year and even
with a few team members missing and others not yet at peak fitness the
team still completely dominated this age group.
Steve McLachlan was in commanding form leading from the front and pulling away for an excellent victory and tremendous start to the season. Steve was ably supported by Matt Bloy and Daniel Winters who - although neither at peak fitness - managed excellent 6th and 7th respectively. The team was closed by Simon Brown in a solid 16th in his first race in this age group. The team ran out easy winners with 30pts. There was tremendous support as eight other athletes were well placed. The combined under 17/under 20 Ladies team were also victorious in their competition. Harriet Scott gained an excellent third spot and top ten finishes from Jade Edwards and Robyn Matson, supported by Clare Robinson's 15th ensured team success, with three more club finishers. Both the under 13 boys and girls teams showed excellent promise with runners up placings. The U13 boys turned up in force with 15 youngsters toeing the start line, most for their first ever cross country. Michael Jones and Jamie Buckley-Stanton, having had successful track seasons, got the winter off to an excellent start finishing in 6th and 7th positions respectively, showing potential to improve further during the winter. The scoring squad was completed by Jonathan Seekings and Chris Sullivan in 17th and 18th, bringing the team home in an excellent 2nd with 46pts, just four points adrift of Basildon's winning 42 point tally. The club had a tremendous turnout for the U13 girls who almost made up three scoring teams. All the girls put in excellent runs - many were making their cross country debuts - and strong runs from Sidnie Sales (4th), Eleanor Bounds (6th), Emma McAuliffe (10th) and Rebecca O'Neill (11th) earned second place points. There were a few tired legs as quite a few of the girls had already run hard races this week for their schools. If these performances continue for both boys & girls a good season is on the cards. The under 15 girls also ran well to place second as Georgie Lou Sales put in a superb performance for fourth, one place ahead of Ingrid Deane, and Emma Fox in 8th and Georgia Davies (19th) completed the scoring four. The senior men had a great turnout with no less than eleven runners, showing the commitment that is needed to succeed in the Essex League. Trevor Keys showed his quality by storming home in a best ever 4th place and with Gavin Maley in 15th and Peter Coates in his first Essex League coming home in 23rd the signs look good for future rounds with a fully fit squad. Three athletes returning from injury, Matt Bland in 29th, Rob Warner in 32nd and Rob Dickenson in 51st completed the scoring team in a strong field. Only the senior ladies and under 17 men were unable to follow the example of the others, as just three ladies and two u17s competed. Nikki Barnett in 9th was first home for the senior ladies with Emma Wallace (25th) and Ellie Mole (53rd) rallying to the cause, while for the u17 men Brad Tungatt's fine 5th place was supported by debutant Daniel Loynes' 25th placing |
