Essex Cross Country League, Round 3, Hylands Park, 29 November 2008

A long-awaited team victory for the senior men and Lauren Deadman's individual senior victory were the highlights of  the third round of the Essex Cross Country League, which took place at Hylands Park, Chelmsford on Saturday. But it was a case of quality rather than quantity as continued injury and illness meant some of the poorest league turn outs for several years, with some young athletes teams short handed.

After ten years of coming so close the senior men’s team victory puts them at the top of the league and with only two rounds to go it will be a fight to hold on. The consistency of Rob Warner, Grant Twist, Steve Rand, Matt Bland and Peter Coates ably assisted by the rest of the squad is starting to pay dividends. Grant Twist was the first Under 20 home lead the Havering squad home with a great 7th place. Closely behind Rob Warner kept up his season's top 10 finishes with a good 9th place. Steve Rand had another very good run to take 14th with Matt Bland improving all the time to take 22nd. Peter Coates did well in the harsh conditions for another top thirty place in 28th and his brother Chris completed the scoring team in 46th. Neill Collins 50th and Graham Hogan 51st battled it out for top fifty places with Russ Middleton finding his cross-country form to take 67th. Tony Collins found the cold and slippery conditions hard but still managed a top one hundred finish in 92nd.  The team's 126 point tally gave them victory by four points.

Lauren Deadman, despite slipping on the muddy course was again the comfortable winner of the senior women’s race by 24 seconds to lead the individual standings after three rounds. She was supported by the consistent Jane Hallam (46th).

In the the first race of the day, the under 13 girls , Avril Loynes produced her best race of the year to achieve an excellent second place finish, supported by a very good run from Lindsay McLachlan in 11th place  but without any other team mates the squad slipped to third in the league table.

The under 13 boys did finish a team and again produced a fine second place finish behind unbeaten Southend. Nick Shade and Freddie Keefe were one again fourth and fifth and Nick Duffey (10th) and Finbar Smythe (11th) completed the scoring quartet. There were five other club runners as Sean Wilson was 22nd, with Thomas Pitkin, Alex Law and Charles Hammond in 29th to 31st and Lewis Middleton in 34th

In the under 15 girls race Rachel Sadler finished strongly for her 8th place, supported by Amanda Blaxland (16th) and Shannon Sullivan (27th). Without a fourth scorer the incomplete team were fifth, and now share second place with Thurrock and Basildon behind another dominant Southend squad.

Little could separate Zoey Littlechild and Amber Turner as they battled their way around the muddy Hylands Park course to finish in 6th and 7th place respectively, just 10 seconds apart. in the under 17/20 women race. The team held onto third in the league.

There was also only two club competitors in the U17 men race as Daniel Shanney had another fine race in fourth and Liam Bush was 12th. The team share second place in the table with an improving Basildon

The U15 boys fielded an impressive ten athletes but again placed fifth, on the day and in the league. Ryan O'Mahoney led the team round in 11th with Hose Gikungu  two places back. Josh Connors (22nd) and Massi Dendani (24th) completed the scorers Ross Earney, Thomas Davis and Will Gazzard were 28th to 30th , Jonathon Seekings was 34th and Ben Thompson and Glen Wileman 38th & 39th.
