Essex Cross Country League, Round 5, Colchester, 2 January 2010

An excellent one-two from Faye Fullerton and Harriet Scott in the senior women's race on the freezing snow affected course was the highlight of the final round of the Essex League at Colchester on Saturday.

Harriet took on the early pace, leading for the first lap only to be overtaken by her team mate Faye at about the halfway stage. Harriet’s second place was more than enough to secure her first place and gold in the league overall following her two previous wins and a second places in her qualifying races. As usual Angie Thompson (36th) and Jane Hallam (37th) supported well to complete the scoring with Anne Gifford in 53rd place.

Jamie Buckley-Stanton's fourth place in the U17 Men's race helped the team to place second on the day & in the league, and earned him individual bronze.  Adam Edwards (11th), Massi Dendani (14th) and Ross Earney (18th) completed the scorers and Adam Wileman in 24th provided support.

Another individual bronze was gained by Lydia Hallam thanks to her third place finish on the day in the U13 Girls' race. Heidi Surman-Wells was just outside the top 10 and youngsters Amy Baggs 36th and debutant Molly Brett (38th) completed the scoring team who were fourth on the day & in the overall table.

The disappointment of only five athletes turning out for the senior men was tempered by the final league positions of two of the club's best male athletes. Matt Bland took the Essex League Vets 40 first place with another sound 20th place in the race while Rob Warner's seventh place was his fourth top ten finish of the season, earned the distinction of being the first senior man for many years to finish in the top three in the final league standings. These two were ably assisted by a strong running Jason Lendon in 23rd. followed by the ever-present Neill Collins and Paul Berrett in 38th and 50th respectively. Four of the team  competed in every round of the league and minor injuries and illness have not stopped these athletes from giving everything for the club.

Hoseah Gikungu's fifth place for the Under 15 boys  also saw him take fifth ranking in the individual league stakes. Nick Shade was 11th and Thomas Davis was 13th but the lack of fourth scorer destroyed any hopes of the league title and the team had to settle for a equal second.

The Under 13 Boys placed second thanks to good packing from Sean Wilson (13th), Adam Hill (17th), Fraser Scott (22nd) and George Dixon (23rd) with five others competing with Charles Hammond 29th, one place ahead of Connor Martin 15:08 and Ryan Pinkney 33rd, Thomas Pitkin 36th and Albert Stokes 37th. The team finished in third in the league stakes, just one point behind Southend.

Gemma Phillips again led home the Under17/Under 20 Women finishing 10th. Rachel Sadler (14th) Sharmila Golan (20th) and Patsy McWeeney (21st) brought the team home third, but it was not quite enough to make the top three in the table.

There was a good turn out from the Under 15 girls with seven finishers led by Becky Stanley in 10th, finishing fifth in the league table, with Bethany Hall just one place back on the day. Amanda Blaxland was 16th and Rosie Brett made the scoring four, and Avril Loynes, Shannon Sullivan and Lindsey Wiggins also saw action.
