Essex Cross Country League, Round 4, Great Notley, 18 December 2010

Havering Mayesbrook athletes braved the snow and blizzard-like conditions to run well in the fourth round of the Essex Cross Country League at Great Notley on Saturday.

Harriet Scott took a step back to full fitness with a convincing win in the senior women's event, finishing two minutes clear of her rivals. There was a welcome return to competition from Hayley Stibbs after a few years away in 15th, and Angie Thompson's finished in 33rd place.

The senior men held onto their top of the league position after claiming another second place finish after the hardy six runners braved the worst of the blizzard in conditions not seen in this series for many years. Four athletes in the top twenty were led home by Jamie Buckley Stanton with a great 10th place not far in front of Rob Warner who finished 12th after falling badly on the first lap. Another faller was Matt Bland who recovered well to take 15th. Veteran Matt said afterwards "I've never, in 26 years, had to run in those conditions! The men's race and probably the senior women's and U17 men's combined race before it should have been cancelled". Jason Lendon was next home with a hard fought run to take 18th and the scoring team was made up by Ian Anthony 41st and Graham Hogan 44th who had both been suffering from heavy colds but were determined not to let the team down.

The Under 15 girls held onto second place in the table after their fourth consecutive second place.  Lydia Hallam's third place was well supported by Lindsay McLachlan in 9th, 12th placed Isabella Woods and Lindsey Wiggins in 19th.

The other three complete teams all finished third.

Sarah Wilson was a fine individual third for Under 13 Girls. Heidi Surman-Wells finished 8th and Robie Nunn and Charlotte Hogg were 21st & 22nd to complete the scoring quartet.

Hoseah Gikungu returned to league action for fifth in the Under 17 Men's race. Good packing from Adam Edwards (14th), Tom Davis (17th) and Chris Hyde one place back, was supported by 19th placed Tom Brennan and Massi Dendani 21st.

The Under 13 Boys were led home by Sean Wilson in 7th, with Thomas Pitkin 18th place, James Giordmaina 20th position and Elliott Nunn's 24th ensured a scoring four. Daniel Moulden was 23rd but was not eligible to score.

James Kidd with a commendable 9th for the Under 15 Boys was the only one in this age group to battle the elements but that was one more than the club showing - or rather non showing - in the Under 17/Under 20 women where no club member made it to the starting line.

For many athletes their reward for competing in the Arctic condition was a journey of up to three hours to get home on the treacherous roads
