Essex Cross Country League, Round 5, Epping Forest, 12 February 2011

The Essex Cross Country League finished on a high note for club teams with two individual and two team victories, as the senior men carried off the league title at Epping Forest on Saturday.

Team manager Pete Warner's senior men's squad rallied to the cause to make history with a win on the day and to come home comfortable winners of their first ever league title. After two wins and two seconds in the first two fixtures the team were in pole position going into the final round and a strong squad of fourteen runners lined up at the start determined not to let the title slip away from them..

Grant Twist with another great run in fifth led home a great team display which saw the scoring six inside the top 22. Strong running Jamie Buckley Stanton was not far behind in 12th while Steve Rand ran well to take 15th just in front of Jason Lendon who had another good run in 18th.  Glen Hill was next home in 21st just pipping Rob Warner who twice lost his shoe in 22nd.

Just outside the scoring team was Vets 40 league winner Matt Bland in a very good 27th place with Chris Smith next home giving the Havering side eight in the top thirty.  Graham Hogan 48th and Simon Hart 49th both made the top fifty with Rob Dickenson returning after a long absence taking 78th. The squad was completed by veterans Gary Howard 83rd, Dave Hallam 86th and Paul Berrett 93rd all of them wanting to be there on the day the team made club history

Harriet Scott won the senior women's race for the second successive meeting with Alexa Joel returning to racing in second spot and Debbie Appleton with her best run of the winter  placing highly in sixth and sibling Jo Sullivan's 19th secured the ladies' win on the day which earned them third spot in the league table. Angie Thompson (44th), Jane Hallam (48th) and debutant Juliett Ward (51st) completed a strong showing from the ladies.

Another win came from Hoseah Gikungu who was victorious in the Under 17 Men's event. There was not much to choose between 13th place Tom Brennan, Ross Earney in 15th, Adam Edwards (17th) and Massi Dendani (18th) who brought the team into second and a bronze medal team finish in the table.

Lydia Hallam's second place led home the second placed Under 15 Girls on the day and the league and won her the individual league bronze. Isabella Woods was an impressive sixth with 8th placed Lindsay McLachlan and 19th position for Avril Loynes making up the scorers with Becky Ward and Lindsey Wiggins in reserve.

Sarah Wilson's third place was best for the second place Under 13 girls and also won her league bronze after a fine series of runs. Amy Baggs and 12th Gemma Archer-Haley finished 11th & 12th with 21st place Abigail Spink confirming third place for the team, with Robie Nunn & Bethany White also in action

The Under 13 boys were third on the day to confirm their league runners up spot after a consistent season. There were just three seconds and four places covering - Elliott Nunn (10th), Fraser Scott (12th) and James Giordmaina (13th) and 22nd for Robert Woodgate completed the quartet. There was also little to choose between well-matched Thomas Pitkin (24th), William Hart 11:00 (26th), Mason Marrable (28th) and Sam Dell (29th).

There was also close packing for the Under 15 boys as Nick Shade (12th), James Kidd (14th), Nick Duffey (17th) and 19th finisher Edward Thompson placed third but poor turn outs earlier in the season cost the team a podium place.

Also out of the reckoning were the incomplete Under 17/Under 20 ladies as Becky Stanley (9th) and Patsy McWeeney (18th) and 20th placed Shannon Sullivan lacked a fourth scorer.
