Essex Cross Country League, Round 3, Hylands Park, Chelmsford, 17 November 2012

The third round of the Essex League, held at Chelmsford's undulating and muddy Hyland's Park, saw club athletes post a a good series of results to brighten up a dull and overcast day.

Hoseah Gikungu almost pulled off the first individual league victory in the Senior men's competition by a club athlete for many years . He outsprinted eventual winner Macauley Delo from West Suffolk approaching the finish but went the wrong side of the finishing tunnel and was overtaken before he could duck inside the course tape and had to settle for a still impressive second place in only his second senior competition.

Rob Warner was next home with another strong run to take fourth. Steve Rand 19th and Ian Anthony 27th both ran well with Paul Berrett 73rd and Sam Jackson 78th making up the scoring six who were fourth. Graham Hogan on his first outing for a couple of years was a good 82nd with Barry Ward 114th, Massi Dendani 126th, Tony Collins 142nd and Colin Wiggins 169th completing the squad.

There was an excellent turn out of 11 athletes in Under 13 girls , including several debutants, as the team showed great consistency and were again runners up.  There was superb "packing" as Rebecca Brown, Katie Mitchell and Jessica Mitchell occupied seventh to ninth places and Kate O'Neill's 14th position completed the scoring quartet. Emily Marshall was one place back in 15th, with Sophie Rand in 21st, Emily James 24th & Grace Macleod 27th and Catherine Barker (29th), Emily Martin (31st) and Elysha Thatcher-Grey (39th) completed the line up..

Despite missing athletes due to illness, injury and the London Youth Games the Under 15 girls still fielded a team of eight and again placed second.  Gemma Archer-Haley was the first club runner home in tenth, just ahead of Lois Wyatt in 11th. Sarah Wilson (15th) and Jess Ward in 18th completed the scorers, with Robbie Nunn (31st), Abbie O'Neill (34th), Grace Ryan (38th) and Ellie Bristow (39th) in reserve.

After being short-handed last week the Under 17 /Under 20 Women had a full complement this time out as Lydia Hallam was seventh and  Bella Woods (16th); Bethaney Hall (19th) and 23rd placed Becky Ward were the scorers with Lindsay McLachlan in 25th as the team bagged third.

Both the younger boys squads made the top three for the first time this winter. The Under 15 boys continued to improve as Elliott Nunn (19th), Robert Woodgate (24th), Stanley Allen (32nd) and Sam Dell in 33rd did enough for third in the team stakes.

The Under 13 boys were also third led home by Oliver Morter in 14th, with Bailey Hearne 16th, Aaron Westwood 27th and much-improved Lewis Debenham (32nd) making up the scoring foursome and Oliver Woods (37th) and Kieron Davies (38th) also in action.

The Under 17 Men were again without a full squad as Nick Shade was 12th, Andrew Holland 17th and Ed Thompson 22nd were one short.

After last week's strong turn out just five senior women toed the line and when Bobbie Westwood dropped out due to sickness race they only had the basic scoring four.  Angie Thompson improved to 26th and 48th placed Jane Hallam, 50th position for Juliet Ward and Tracy O'Neill's 61st could only manage ninth place.
