Essex Cross Country League, Round 5, Epping Forest, 11 January 2013

The club's Essex Cross Country League campaign ended on a high at a very muddy Epping Forest on Saturday as the senior ladies repeated their team victory at the previous weekend's county championships and Rob Warner & Steve Rand picked up individual best league performer awards.

As at Hadleigh the weekend before the senior women's quartet comfortably won in the team stakes with two of the first three finishers as evergreen Debbie Appleton reversed the placings on her younger teammate to place second as the returning Faye Fullerton was third. Vicky Smith was a fine fifth and Jo Sullivan's 17th position secured a 20 point advantage over Colchester and third placed Chelmsford, who had done enough in the earlier rounds to take the league title. There was a good run from Jade Edwards in 24th with Angie Thompson 31st, and a good turn out as Juliet Ward (46th), Mo Lear (48th), Bobbie Westwood (55th), and 57th placed Tracey O'Neill ended the league season in style.

Rob Warner’s fantastic second place in the senior men's race secured the honours as the first Havering Mayesbrook man for many years to take the individual league gold medal. Battling through the deep mud, Rob made his push for second place over the last hundred yards and in doing so shaded former teammate Grant Twist for the title. He was ably assisted by Jamie Buckley Stanton who had a great run to come home in 11th while Steve Rand won the Vets 40 category with another strong run in 15th. However his efforts brought him more than winner’s trophy, as he cut his hand badly during the race and was taken to hospital by ambulance. Ian Anthony 27th and Mat Bland 33rd both ran well to achieve their best league placing of the season and Simon Hart 46th completed the scoring team who were fourth. One place back was the improving Paul Grange in 47th while Sam Jackson 60th, Graham Hogan 68th and Barry Ward 77th all had their best runs of the season, as did Tony Collins 104th and Collin Wiggins 140th.

The ultra-consistent Under 13 Girls made it five runners up spots out of five and not surprisingly were second in the league table too. Great packing from Rebecca Brown, Emily Marshall and Katie Mitchell who occupied seventh to ninth positions and 14th placed Kate O'Neill gave them second with much to spare and there were great supporting runs from 18th & 19th placed Sophie Rand and Jessica Mitchell and 24th & 25th placed Grace Macleod and Emily James. Rebecca , Katie & Emily (Marshall) were also seventh to ninth in the individual standings.

Similarly the Under 15 Girls also extended their run of second places behind league winners Chelmsford despite the absence of key runners. Gemma Archer-Haley again led the squad home in seventh with fit again Lois Wyatt 12th, one place ahead of an improved Heidi Surman-Wells with 21st placed Jess Ward completing the scorers.  Louise Lear (24th), Robbie Nunn (29th) and Abbie O'Neill (31st) completed the roster.

The Under 13 Boys couldn't match their win in the last round but third place on the day lifted them to third in the league stakes. Recent recruit Tommy Sheldrick showed further rapid improvement in fourth and 12th placed Oliver Bath, the improving Lewis Debenham in 16th and the ever-reliable Aaron Westwood (21st) closed in the scorers with Billy Barker (30th), Kieron Davies (33rd) and 38th Lewis Jolly all ploughing through the mud.

The Under 17 Girls/ under 20 women  again finished third on the day to seal third in the league. Lindsay McLachlan was pleased with her 18th place finish with vital points from 21st  placed Becky Ward, the first outing this term from Shannon Sullivan 30th and Lindsey Wiggins 32nd ensured a scoring quartet.

The Under 17 Men were again short-handed - but so were most others clubs in this age group and theeir fourth place confirmed third in the league. James Kidd's fine sixth place led the way with good efforts from Andrew Holland (17th) and Abdul Mohamed two places back. The Under 15 Boys ended their disappointing season in fourth after the trio of Elliott Nunn (22nd), Bradley West (27th) and 31st position for  Will Hart placed them fifth on the day.

Next Saturday sees many of the younger athletes representing their borough teams in the Essex Schools Championships at the challenging and hilly Gloucester Park venue.  With the age groupings different to normal club competitions the races are likely to produce a different set of results, as athletes battle for English Schools' county selection.
