Essex Cross Country League, Round 1, Great Notley Country Park, 19 October 2013

The cross country season got off to a flying start when club teams opened their Essex League account with two individual and two teams wins at Great Notley on Saturday.

The Under 13 Girls were rampant with three runners in the first four and two more in the top 13.  Molly Bath showed impressive potential when she held off team mate Kate O'Neill for a Havering one-two with Katie Mitchell in fourth. Jessica Mitchell edged out Sophie Rand to claim the fourth scoring spot, the pair finishing 12th & 13th, with eight other club finishers - Catherine Barker 21st, Molly Sweetman 30th, Chloe Morter 34th,  Milli Lewis 36th, Jessica James & Amelia Day 40th & 41st with Ellie Rae Cass (48th) & 50th placed Lucy Priestley completing the 14 strong squad. With Rebecca Brown dropping out due to cramp when highly placed the rout could have been even greater.

Another individual & team victory was earned by the senior women who got of to a very good start to the season with 10 competitors on the day. Lauren Deadman took the lead from the gun and never looked like relinquishing it. Over the two lap course she gradually extended her lead to over 100 metres over Basildon's runner up international Gemma Kersey and was catching the two under 17 boys in front of her in the combined race. Lauren was well supported by Debbie Appleton who came a very good 5th, Gemma Phillips 9th and to complete the scoring quartet Jo Sullivan in 30th place, giving the team an eight point cushion over second placed Colchester. The scorers were also supported by the "Mums' Army" of Juliet Ward 64th, Jane Hallam 67th, Mo Lear 72nd, Tracy O'Neill 84th and Clare Rudgley 89th.

The senior men's team had a great turnout with no less than eighteen athletes toeing the line. Rob Warner led the team home with a strong 5th place, with Jamie Buckley-Stanton battled well to come home in 10th, not far in front of 12th placed Hoseah Gikungu. Steve Rand started his season strongly in 24th with Ian Anthony and Matt Bland completing the scoring team in 31st and 33rd. Simon Hart and Paul Berrett both ran well in the heavy rain to take 49th and 53rd respectively. Martin Chester in 60th was followed home by two U20 athletes new to the senior men's races, Andrew Holland 72nd and Nick Shade 82nd who both handled the task very well. Brothers Sam and Luke Jackson continue to impress in 95th and 113th while Darren Priestley (131st), with Barry Ward 147th, Tony Collins 149th  Jeremy Watson 210th and Colin Wiggins 222nd completed the largest  senior men's squad for many years.

The inexperienced Under 13 boys made up of mostly new members acquitted themselves well in third place, only eight points behind the winners.  Debutants John Fennessey (10th) & Jack Rice (11th) headed the club parade with 18th placed Oliver Woods 12:15 & 21st placed Bailey Hearne completing the scoring four. The roster was competed by Sam Atkins (22nd), Kieran Davies (34th), Sam Mezoori (36th), Sam Shrimpton 53rd & 55th position Matthew Edwards.

The Under 17 & Under 20 women's team just missed out on third place scoring the same total as Southend but losing out due to the lower position of their fourth scorer. Lydia Hallam was first home in fourth and 9th placed Sarah Wilson ran well to make the top 10 while Isabella Woods in 17th & Zoe Rudgley (38th) completed the unlucky scoring quartet. Also in action were Abbie O'Neill & Lindsey Wiggins who were 39th & 40th respectively.

The Under 17 Men team placed sixth. Abdul Mohamed and Matt Braybrook were 13th and 14th and Robert Woodgate 21st and 28th placed Euan Harlow were the other scorers with Brad West (32nd) in reserve.

The Under 15 Boys found the going tough. the scoring four were Oliver Morter (26th), Lewis Debenham (28th), Oliver Bath (45th) & James Stewart (50th) with Aaron Westwood one place further back on his U15 debut.

The Under 15 girls had an incomplete team after Lois Wyatt (breathing difficulties) & Maria Holloway dropped out leaving Emily Marshall (20th), Jess Ward (26th) & Grace Macleod (35th) one short of a scoring quartet.

The squads will be hoping to repeat the strong turn outs and good results in Round 2 is at Basildon on 16th November.
