Essex Cross Country League, Round 2, Basildon, 16 November 2013

The Under 13 Girls led the way with an individual and team wins as the Havering Mayesbrook cross country squads tackled the second round of the Essex league at the always-challenging Basildon course.

After her second place last time out Kate O'Neill went one better this time with victory in the Under 13 Girls. Round 1 winner Molly Bath had to settle for third this time and Katie Mitchell's sixth place & Rebecca Brown's 11th ensured another comfortable team win with Jess Mitchell (13th) and Sophie Rand (14th) making it an impressive 6 runners in the top 14. The squad had nine other finishers with Catherine Barker (23rd) & Molly Sweetman (30th) inside the top 30. The roll call was completed by Kate Walker & Jessica James (35th & 36th), 40th placed Ella King,  Lucy Priestley (45th), Ellirae Cass (47th), Chloe Morter (49th) and Rebecca Stanley (56th).

With Lauren Deadman resting before next week's European Trials and Gemma Philips opting for the London Championships the senior women were unable to match their round one victory but did well to place third with a  fine turn out for a very difficult course with its usual testing hill. Debbie Appleton continued her good early season form with an impressive 5th place. Not far behind in 10th was Vicky Smith with Robyn Matson in her first outing since her recent marathon debut in 18th. Jo Sullivan's 31st place completed the scoring four to ensure team third. The mums' army produced their usual solid support with Angie Thompson (42nd), Jane Hallam (59th), Mo Lear (64th), Tracy O'Neill ( 66th) and Clare Rudgley (86th).

The other female teams were fourth.

The Under 17 & Under 20 women's team were headed by Lydia Hallam's fifth place with Sarah Wilson improving to sixth. Isabella woods in 16th & Abbie O'Neill in 36th ensure a scoring quartet.

After fielding an incomplete team last time the Under 15 girls made no mistake this time with eight finishers.  Gemma Archer-Hayley returning after a long injury break in 11th, one place ahead of Emily Marshall. Jess Ward (21st) & Holly Hyde (32nd) completed the scorers with Grace Macleod (33rd), Emily James (38th), Elysha Thatcher-Gray (43rd) & 44th placed Maisy Shead also seeing action

The Under 13 boys also finished in fourth. John Fennessey was again the highest placed in 12th with close packing from Sam Atkins (22nd), Kieran Davies (23rd) & Oliver Woods (26th) making up the scoring quartet. There were six other finishers with Louis Shead (39th),  - Ben Lammin (44th) & Jay Vasallo one place back, with Sam Shrimpton in 49th. Toby Marshall and Matthew Edwards completed the squad in 60th & 61st

The Under 17 Men team had an improved result in fourth. Abdul Mohamed's 16th place was the best placing with Matthew Braybrook (20th), Euan Harlow (29th) & Tom Sheldrick in 32nd the scorers and Bradley West 34th.

The Under 15 Boys were again seventh headed by Oliver Morter (24th) & Lewis Debenham (26th). Oliver Bath (35th) & James Stewart (40th) completed the scoring four and 48th placed Michael Vanderhook in reserve

The senior men's team had another great turnout as Rob Warner led the fifteen strong squad home with a powerful 6th place. Hoseah Gikungu, still finding his great form of last year was next home in 21st. Ian Anthony's strong run brought him home in 28th with Vet Matt Bland, beating many of his contemporaries, not far behind in 40th. Martin Chester and Paul Berrett both ran well to complete the scoring squad in 62nd and 67th respectively.  Rob Dickenson on the comeback trail was next home in 116th just in front of Luke Jackson 119th. Under twenty Andrew Holland ran well to take 129th place. Vets Barry Ward and Julian Davies followed in 135th and 146th and the squad was completed by Tony Collins 157th , Gavin Maley 158th, Jeremy Watson 188th and Colin Wiggins 220th.
