Essex Cross Country League, Round 4, Hockley, 11 January 2014

The recent heavy rain produced the most difficult conditions of the season as the fourth round of the Essex Country League took place at a very waterlogged Hockley course on Saturday.

The Under 13 Girls  have sown up the league title with a round to go as the recorded their fourth straight league win, to add to last week's county champs victory. Kate O'Neill and Katie Mitchell repeated their second and third place county positions and Sophie Rand (11th) & Molly Bath (14th) completed the scoring four. Although the turn-out was lower than usual there were still five other squad members with Becca Brown (15th), Catherine Barker (& Jessica Mitchell, 21st & 22nd, with Ella King 26th & Lucy Priestly 33rd.

Evergreen super-vet Debbie Appleton notched up yet another career win in the Senior Women's race and Vicky Smith bounced back from her fall last week in fourth. Patsy McWeeney (38th) & Jane Hallam (47th) were the other scorers in the fourth placed team and Mo Lear (50th), Tracy O'Neill (60th) & Clare Rudgley in 65th added to the roster.

The Under 17 Men's  second place was their best this season. Abdul Mohamed again led the way in 12th and Matthew Braybrook was not far back in 19th. Euan Harlow (22nd) & 25th placed Bradley West ensured the scoring four placed second.  The Under 17/20 Women also placed second. Another good run brought Sarah Wilson home in fifth and Bella Woods (12th), Zoe Rudgley (23rd) and vital points from Lindsey Wiggins (29th)

Third place for the Under 15 Girls  matched their best result of the winter as good team work saw Emily Marshall (15th), Jess Ward 917th), Emily James (19th) & Grace Macleod (26th) come close to challenge for second place.  The consistent Under 13 boys also placed third, with a fine turn out and are now equal second in the league table. Jack Rice was a good 12th with Sam Atkins (19th), Kieran Davies (23rd) & 30th placed Oliver Woods the scoring four. Nine more finishers made it an impressive bakers' dozen thanks to Ben Lammin (32nd), Jay Vassallo, Sam Shrimpton 13:30; Ellis Osborne & Peter Brinton-Quinn finishing in close order between 41st & 44th while Max Sowerbutts (46th), Joseph Wyatt (49th) & Todd Riddell (53rd) also saw action. The short-handed Under 15 boys fifth as Lewis Debenham (14th), Oliver Bath (18th) & 29th placed James Stewart were one short of a full team.

The Senior Men's team still had many of their top athletes missing, but those who did run turned in a very good performance over a much shortened course. Rob Warner carried on from last week's county championships with another superb 5th place. Ian Anthony moved up to 20th with another good run after once again taking the honours in the Southend park run earlier in the day. Matt Bland was next home in 29th with another very good run over the waterlogged course with significantly improved runs from Under 20 Andrew Holland in43rd and Luke Jackson 61st,, and Barry Ward completed the scoring team in 77th . Gary Howard took a step back full fitness in 97th , Julian Davies next in 98th and Colin Wiggins completed the squad in 123rd.

The fifth and final round  is on 8th February at Epping Forest while next Saturday sees the young athletes contest the Essex County Secondary Schools Championships
