Essex Cross Country League, Round 5, Chingford-Epping Forest, 8 February 2014

The Essex Country League ended in true cross country fashion at the muddy & waterlogged Epping Forest course on Sunday.  The under 13 girls lifted the League title and a strong end to the season ensured top 3 league finishes for most squads.

The terrible conditions on this notoriously muddy course required a late change of route - and some marshals seemed confused by the changes, sending runners the wrong way with the Under 11 girls in particular diverted through waist high water in the race preceding the main programme!  But the turn outs from the club in most age groups were as good as they have been all winter.

The Under 13 girls maintained their unbeaten record on the county scene to lift the league title, which was already a formality. Kate O'Neill & Katie Mitchell were second & third and also repeated these placings in the league standings and with Becca Brown & Sophie Rand in the top 10 confirmed their dominance. Molly Bath was 17th before Havering athletes filled most of the places between 24th and 38th thanks to 24th placed Jessica Mitchell, Catherine Barker (26th), Ella King (28th), Kate Walker & Milli Lewis in 30th & 31st, Molly Sweetman & Lucy Priestley 33rd & 34th and Jessica James, Millie Redgrave and Amelia Day 36th to 38th with Emily Crane 44th.

Lydia Hallam's runner up spot was her highest of the winter and bagged her league individual silver for the Under 17/Under 20 women with Sarah Wilson in 8th and Lindsey Wiggins 24th as the squad placed joint third in the table. The Under 17 Men's second consecutive runners up spot also ensured third in the league with Abdul Mohamed in 8th, one place in front of Matthew Braybrook with Euan Harlow,  - Bradley West & Robert Woodgate coming home 17th to 19th.

Third place for the Under 15 girls on the day confirmed their joint third place in the table with Emily Marshall 10th, Jess Ward, Emily James & Emma Jolly occupying 17th to 19th positions and Holly Hyde close up in 21st.

Although the Under 13 boys' fifth place was their lowest of the season it kept them in third place in the table. John Fennessey led home the squad in 14th with Sam Atkins next home in 18th and 34th placed Lewis Jolly and 40th position Kieran Davies completing the scorers. Five other finishers - Sam Shrimpton (43rd), Sonny Rossington (45th); Matthew Bright (46th, Max Sowerbutts (48th) & 50th placed Peter Brinton-Quinn 14 - also completing the soggy course.

A second successive victor in the Senior women's race ensured Debbie Appleton carried home the individual Vets 35+ title and would have won the senior category as well. Jo Sullivan (24th), Jane Hallam (33rd) & Clare Rudgley (48th) ensured a scoring team who comfortably held onto team third in the table.

The Under 15 boys rallied to finish third on the day despite not having a full team with Lewis Debenham again highest placed in 14th, with Oliver Bath 17th & James Stewart 26th but it was too late to challenge the league top three as the team placed fifth in the table.

The Senior Men had a team of eleven to face the heavy rain and gale force winds that occurred during their race in conditions that were the worst seen for many years in an Essex league. The team were once again led home by Rob Warner still suffering from the virus that kept him out of the Southern Champs two weeks previous in 14th place, which confirmed his league third position. Jason Lendon in his first outing of the season showed what the team had been missing in very good 26th with Ian Anthony was home in 29th after yet another win in the Southend Park run that morning. Matt Bland kept up his good form coming home in 31st for second in the vets standings with Martin Chester was next home with a fine run in 46th and Paul Berrett completing the scoring team in 61st for second in the 50+ category. Barry Ward continues to improve finishing in a seasons best of 69th with Julian Davies not far behind in 93rd. The squad was completed by Gary Howard 112th, Tony Collins 119th and Colin Wiggins 140th who all showed the commitment to the team in such terrible conditions.
