Essex Cross Country League, Round 1, One Tree Hill, 18 October 2014

The Essex Cross country league season got under way at a tough One Tree Hill course on Saturday with wins for Kate O'Neill and the Under 15 girls and third places for the under 15 boys and under 17/20 women.

Kate's comfortable victory with a 26 second margin over the second placed athlete in the Under 15 Girls’ race was a big step forward over older opposition in her first individual race in the age group. Good runs for Katie Mitchell and Jess Mitchell in 15th and 16th, and Becca Brown's 21st place ensured a 12 point cushion over second placed Cambridge. Amba Coombe enjoyed a strong debut in 25th with Catherine Barker 30th, and Emily James 37th also competing.

Lydia Hallam's fourth place led the Under 17/20 women's team to a good third place. Heidi Surman-Wells (15th) and Bella Woods (17th) made the top 20, with under 15 Emily Marshall opting to run against older opponents in 26th. Holly Hyde and Ella Jolly completed the line up in 36th and 37th.

A fine 7th place from Jack Rice was the highlight for the third placed under 15 boys.  Tom Sheldrick (14th), Oliver Bath (20th) and Lewis Debenham (26th) were others who made up the scoring quartet, and Sam Atkins (26th), John Fennessey (31st), and Kieran Davies (40th) completed an improved turn out in this age group.

The Under 13 boys squad, with many athletes experiencing their first club league competition, were edged into fourth.  Ellis Osborne impressed in sixth, with Ben Lammin placed 17th, while debutants Alex Ford and Ben Nash completed the scoring quartet in 21st and 22nd respectively.  Also competing were Henry Lay (41st), Luke Chester (47th), Reece Debenham (59th), and Todd Riddell (61st).

Molly Sweetman (11th) and Grace Dukelow (13th) headed the Under 13 girls' team in fifth place.  Molly Bath (26th) and Rosie Brown (33rd) were the other scorers, only just  ahead of Aaliyah Davies (34th) and Olivia Hyde (35th) with seven others tasting cross country action with Chloe Morter, Jessica James, Charlotte Wight and Chloe Gagen (42nd to 45th), Ella King (49th), Chloe Rutter (52nd) and Lucy Priestley (57th) making it eleven U13s in all.

The Under 17 Men were also fifth place thanks to the efforts of Euan Harlow (26th), Bradley West (32nd), Kieran O'Hara (39th) and Matthew Braybrook (42nd).

A strong-running Rob Warner worked his way through the senior men’s field, leading home the fifth placed men's team in a competitive field. Jason Lendon ran well to finish 27th, just ahead of Matt Bland (31st). Paul Grange (38th) out sprinted Paul Wyatt (39th) for the fourth and fifth scoring places and Alfie Waithaka completed the scorers in 51st on his debut. Under 20s Abdul Mohamed (57th) and Andrew Holland (85th) continued to impress with Barry Ward (118th), Chris Coates (131st) and Gary Howard (149th) completing the squad on the very demanding course with several hills to go up, but it seemed very few to come down!

There was another excellent turn out in the senior women’s race with eight finishers.  Debbie Appleton led the way with a very good seventh in a strong field with several youngsters joining the seniors’ ranks and was well supported by close packing from sister Jo Sullivan (49th), Jane Hallam (55th), Mo Lear (57th), Juliet Ward (60th), Tracy O’Neill (65th), with newcomer Nicole Meehan (74th) and Bobbie Westwood (80th), as the squad placed ninth.
