Essex Cross Country League, Round 2, Hylands Park Chelmsford, 15 November 2014

Havering AC's strength in depth was tested to the full at Saturday's Essex Cross Country League second round at Chelmsford when the clash with the London Youth Games deprived the club of a host of regular athletes competing for the Havering Borough teams. But despite missing some familiar faces the squad pulled through to record some fine results, with several athletes winning Essex selection on the muddy Hyland Park course.

Lauren Deadman warmed up for the European Trials on the 29th November with a fine victory the senior women’s race.  Debbie Appleton provided strong support led the way with a good sixth place and Jo Sullivan (38th) &  Jane Hallam (63rd) completed the scorers with  Juliet Ward (70th), Mo Lear (77th),Tracy O’Neill & Clare Rudgley (98th & 99th) with Bobbie Westwood 112th for the fifth placed team..

The Under 15 Girls’ race saw the near full strength squad romp to another comfortable victory to match their Round 1 success.  Kate O'Neill wasn't able to repeat her first round victory but fifth place on the day in a competitive race ensured Essex selection. Sophie Rand had one of her best results to date in eighth place and Katie Mitchell (13th) and Emily Marshall (16th) brought the scoring quartet home with 22 points to spare. Jess Mitchell (19th), Becca Brown's 26th place, Catherine Barker 32nd, Emily James 37th and Grace Macleod (39th) completed the 9 strong turn out.

Lydia Hallam's fourth place also earned her Essex selection and led the Under 17/20 women's team to fourth place despite losing key athletes to the Youth Games. Bella Woods was next home in 17th with Lois Wyatt (32nd) and Holly Hyde (37th) completing the scorers with Zoe Rudgley 41st and Jessica Watts making her debut in 42nd.

The Under 13 girls' team were badly affected by the Youth Games clash but still fielded a nine-strong squad who finished sixth.  Aaliyah Davies did well to place 16th with Olivia Hyde (18th) not far behind. Milli Lewis (25th) & Alice Brown (27th) completed the scoring quartet 12:30 with Jessica James (28th) Charlotte Wright (37th), Ella King (41st) and Hannah Paton and Chloe Rutter (50th & 51st) ensuring a strong turn out.

An excellent seventh place for the under 15 boys earned Tom Sheldrick his Essex vest and Lewis Debenham was close up in ninth. Sam Atkins (36th)  and Kieran Davies (46th) completed the scoring four who placed fifth.

The Under 13 boys squad also finished fifth. A good run from Oliver Woods in ninth led the way, with Henry Lay (25th), Ellis Osborne (33rd) and Ben Nash (36th) completed the scoring quartet. There were five other finishers with newcomer Billy Riley 54th, Reece Debenham (57th), Matthew Bright (59th), Joe Wyatt (62nd) & Jake Long (64th) gaining good experience of club competition.

The Under 17 Men were one short of a scoring four as the trio of Bradley West (31st), James Stewart (35th) and Kieran O'Hara (40th) were eighth.

The senior men had another very good turnout with twelve athletes toeing the start line. They were again led home by a strong run from Rob Warner in 6th place. Matt Bland improved on his last outing to take a good 24th with Jason Lendon 38th and Paul Grange 39th both making the top forty. Jamie Buckley–Stanton in his first outing of the season was next home in 48th, with Jason Crispin completing the scoring team in 77th. Russ Middleton ran well to come home in 83rd closely followed by brothers Sam and Luke Jackson in 98th and 107th respectively.  Barry Ward 135th, Tony Collins 150th, and Gary Howard 170th all did well on the very muddy shortened course to complete the senior men's squad.
