Essex Cross Country League, Round 1, One Tree Hill, 10 October 2015

Kate O'Neill's brilliant individual victory led the Under 15 girls to victory as the Essex Cross Country League season got underway at One Tree Hill on Saturday.

The Under 15 girls squad were comfortable winners with all four of the scoring team placing in the top ten and Kate O'Neill coming home almost a minute clear of the opposition for a great start to the season. Sophie Rand got the better of Jess Mitchell as the duo placed fifth and sixth while Molly Sweetman's tenth place ensured an emphatic victory. Grace Dukelow (19th) & Molly Bath (21st) were not far back and Kate Walker, Ella King, Charlotte Wright & Anna Osborn all finished between 33rd & 37th.

There was also a good turn-out from the Under 17/20 women who placed third. Sarah Wilson continued her return to fitness in 10th with Bella Woods 13th, Lois Wyatt 15th and Georgia Phillips 20th on her debut completing the scorers with Emily Marshall (23rd) and Emily James (25th) providing back-up.

The young Under 13 Girls did well in fourth led home by 10th placed Sydney Foley. Poppy Ellis (14th) and Lily Bath made the top 20 and Annie Grannell in 24th completed the scoring four. and Alice Atkins (27th), Jessica James (32nd) and newcomer  Rebecca Rourke (37th) also took part.

Also fourth were the Under 13 boys with Alex Ford placing fourth for his best run to date with Henry Lay 13th, Ben Naish 24th and Timi McDaniel making the scoring four in 36th on his debut.   Newcomers Jordan Ryan and Casey Fletcher were 37th & 47th with Reece Debenham 51st.

Ben Davis (10th) was the first finisher for the Under 17 Boys and Oliver Morter (24th), James Stewart (33rd) & Oliver Bath (37th) were the scoring quartet with Kieran O'Hara also in action in 39th. The Under 15 boys were one short of a scoring foursome with Jack Rice's strong run earning him fifth, Sam Atkins returning from injury in 26th while new member Alex Friend will have learnt from his first league competition. The Senior Women were also shorthanded but Alexa Joel made a confident return to action in fourth after an injury-hit past few years and Mo Lear (71st) & Tracy O'Neill (75th) also flew the club flag

Another good turnout by the Senior Men saw fifteen athletes toe the start line with Rob Warner shrugging off a heavy cold to lead home the team with a fine run in 7th place, followed by a strong effort from Paul Grange in 18th for his highest Essex League placing. Another of the squad suffering from the ill effects of a cold, Steve Rand, was next home in 27th with fellow vet Matt Bland running well in 37th with Martin Chester 55th and Jason Crispin 59th completing the scoring six.

The next four runners were closely grouped with Simon Hart leading them in 68th, Sam Jackson in 70th, Paul Berrett 75th and Luke Jackson 77th. The squad was completed by Russ Middleton 103rd, Steve Walker 106th and Tony Collins 122nd but the team lost Jamie Buckley Stanton and Mathew Braybrook through falls on the wooded section.
