Essex Cross Country League, Round 4, Orion, Epping Forest, 2 January 2016

Club teams showed no signs of any New Year hangover as they recorded their best results of the winter season at the fourth round of the Essex Cross Country League hosted by Orion at a very muddy Epping Forest course on Saturday. Three team victories were backed up by four second places, with only a blank from the senior women spoiling the celebrations.

The Senior Men team fielding their strongest available team started 2016 in style with a fantastic team victory - their first this year.  Rob Warner again led them home with a fine 9th place with a strong running Paul Grange not far behind with his highest placing of the season in 15th. Chasing him home in 18th was Steve Rand, with good runs from Alfie Waithaka 22nd and Matt Bland 27th both making the top thirty. Next home after a long layoff was Ian Anthony in 38th who completed the scoring team. Mat Braybrook had a great run in 42nd with Martin Chester following closely in 53rd . The 11-strong squad was completed by Paul Berrett 70th , Abdul Mohammed 74th and Steve Walker 104th.

The improving Under 13 Boys also turned in a five star performance with victory over league leaders Thurrock.  Alex Ford's fourth place led the team home with Henry Lay (15th), Ben Naish (24th) and 26th placed Dominic Jarvis making up the scoring four. There were an impressive eight other finishers with Luke Chester, Casey Fletcher, debutant Oliver Yexley 14:34, Timi McDaniel, Reece Debenham and  Jordan Ryan in close order between 27th & 37th and Jake Long a few places back.

The Under 15 Girls confirmed their league title with one round left and despite losing her unbeaten local record this winter an under-the-weather Kate O'Neill's runners up spot confirmed her individual league title. Jess Mitchell's third place was her highest placing and with Sophie Rand and Molly Sweetman both inside the top 10 the team recorded another emphatic victory. Good runs saw Molly Bath and  Catherine Barker achieve their highest positions in 14th & 16th and Chloe Morter (27th) and Kate Walker (30th) completed the strong line up.

Second place for the Under 17 Boys  moved them into runners up spot in the table. Ben Davis starred in third and with Oliver Bath and with Lewis Debenham 13th & 14th and James Stewart in 21st recording their best positions, the team were a comfortable second with Oliver Morter & Kieran O'Hara (24th & 25th) in reserve.

The Under 13 Girls' second place was their highest of the season with Sydney Foley an impressive fourth. Lily Bath, Alice Brown and Annie Grannell finished 14th, 15th & 16th for a good second place and there was strong support from Alice Atkins (18th), Hannah Yexley (19th), Jessie James (23rd), Rebecca O'Rourke (25th), Hannah Johnson (27th) and Jessie Collier (32nd).

The Under 17 / Under 20 women's  second position was also their best this year thanks to Sarah Wilson & Bella Woods (7th & 8th) and Georgia Phillips and Emily James (15th & 16th).  After three seventh places second place was a huge improvement for the Under 15 Boys boosted by second place from Jack Rice with John Fennessey sixth and Sam Atkins (11th) and Oliver Woods (19th) completing the scoring four, with  Alex Friend (28th)  and Billy Fox (35th) also in action.

The only black note was the Senior Women's inability to field any competitors which leaves them bottom of the Division 1 table and in danger of relegation unless they can field a full squad at the final fixture at Colchester on 7th February..
