Essex Cross Country League, Round 5, Colchester Abbey Fields, 7 February 2016

The Essex Cross Country League season reach a successful conclusion with league titles for the Under 15 Girls and Under 17 men’s squads, with individual league titles in the same age groups for Kate O’Neill and Ben Davis.

The Under 15 Girls have been untouchable at county level all season and victory in the final league fixture ensured that they lifted the league title with an unbeaten record and Kate O’Neill’s fourth victory in five league races confirmed her individual title. Jessica Mitchell’s runners-up spot was her best this season and 6th place for Sophie Rand and 10th for Molly Bath completed the domination and their strength in depth was reflected in 12th for Catherine Barker, 14th for Molly Sweetman with Chloe Morter, Charlotte Wright and Kate Walker also in action.

Ben Davis' first league season in club colours came to a successful season as an individual victory in the Under 17 Men's race not only led the squad to victory but also won him the individual title. With Oliver Bath, James Stewart 9th & Kieran O'Hara in 13th the team earned a narrow win over Chelmsford, who were league runners up.

There was an impressive turnout from the Under 13 Girls and Sydney Foley in fourth was again first home and Lily Bath’s 7th place was her highest finish with Annie Grannell 20th and Chloe Rand making the scoring four one place back on an impressive debut as the team finished second to share second place in the table with Thurrock. Alice Atkins, Rebecca O'Rourke, Jessica James, Hannah Johnson and  Rose Mears on her debut placed between 25th & 31st and Ann Cooper, Morgan Romain and Jessie Collier completed the dozen strong line up.

Second place for the Under 13 Boys completed a strong end to the season and a share of league runners up spot with Harlow. Alex Ford was fourth and with another year in the age group will be challenging for the title next winter with Ben Naish (9th), Henry Lay (12th) and Dominic Jarvis (16th) the scoring four and Timi McDaniel, Jake Long, Reece Debenham and Tom Puxley competing well.

Bella Woods’ third place earned her the silver medal in the league standings and led the Under 17 / Under 20 Women to second on the day and third in the table with Georgia Phillips (7th) & Emily James (11th) the other club runners.

After second place last time the Under 15 Boys had hoped to end the season strongly but an incomplete team of Sam Atkins (12th), Oliver Woods (15th) and Alex Friend (23rd) placed sixth and fourth in the table.

The Senior Men continued with another strong team performance coming second to the hosts. Rob Warner led them home in a very good 8th place to secure bronze medal place in the final individual standings. Next home was Steve Rand with another fine performance in 13th which confirmed silver in the Vets Age 40y standings. Jason Lendon returned from a long injury layoff in 21st closely followed by Ian Anthony 23rd and Matt Bland 27th . The scoring team was completed by Martin Chester in 39th with Jason Crispin chasing him home in 42nd . Paul Berret had another good run to finish 54th and Graham Hogan 66th, Steve Walker 71st, Tony Collins 89th and Richard Rowe 98th all competed well on a very blustery course. Both the senior men and veterans finished third in the table.

After a disappointing season the senior women needed a strong showing to avoid relegation but with Tracy O’Neil the only competitor in 46th they slipped into Division 2 next winter.

Ten club young athletes had also competed for Essex Schools the previous day in the south East Inter Counties at Bexhill.

Kate O’Neill (4th), Jess Mitchell (16th) and Sophie Rand (55th) all ran weIl in the Inter Girls, Sarah Wilson (34th) and Georgia Phillips (61st) ran in the senior girls and Grace Dukelow (63rd) in the junior girls. For the boys Harry Jones (43rd) was in the junior race, with Oliver Morter (68th) & John Fennessey (71st) in the Inters, while Matt Braybrook was 50th in the senior boys.
