Essex Cross Country League, Round 1, One Tree Hill, 8 October 2016

Havering athletes got their Essex League season off to a flying start with two individual victories and three team wins at the first round fixture, hosted by Thurrock Harriers at One Tree Hill on Saturday.

The Under 13 boys set the ball rolling with an individual and team success in the opening race. Alex Ford was an impressive winner crossing the finish line almost 20 seconds ahead of team mate Matthew Blacklock who placed a brilliant second on his league debut. With another debutant Lenny Houston in 11th and Timi McDaniel one place back there was a nine-point margin over runners up Southend in the team stakes. Oliver Yexley (15th) & and Jack Thomson (30th) completed the squad.

There was also a team victory for the Under 17 Girls / Under 20 women and only Chelmsford's Schools' International Khai Mhlanga stood between Kate O'Neill and victory, with Jess Mitchell in close order in third. Sophie Rand's 9th place and Catherine Barker in 16th ensured a comfortable team with Georgia Phillips (24th ) and Emily James (26th) in reserve.

The Senior Men took the honours finishing first, led home by Rob Warner with a scintillating run to claim a fantastic second place. Under 20 athlete Ben Davis in his first senior Essex League effort finished a very good tenth, and he was followed home by Steve Rand 18th and Paul Grange 25th who both performed well in the tricky conditions. Next home were two more Under 20s, Euan Harlow 46th and James Stewart 53rd both competing very well to make the scoring six. Jason Crispin was next in 57th place followed by another Under 20 making his senior league debut Kieran O'Hara in 71st. A trio of vets were next in, led by Gary Atkins 80th Paul Berrett 88th and Steve Walker 93rd before the squad was completed by Richard Rowe 96th, Graham Hogan 108th, U20 Aidan Elmore 113th , Tony Collins 137th, and Barry Ward 153rd. With more runners to come back from injury the seniors’ season looks very promising.

The Under 13 Girls had to settle for second as Sydney Foley was runner up to Basildon’s Abigail Ives, with the promising Chloe Rand in 7th, Annie Grannell in her best race in club colours in 10th, while Hannah Yexley (14th) got the better of 15th placed Alice Atkins in the battle to complete the scoring quartet. The club fielded a dozen runners in all as Maddie Barker was 19th, Rose Mears 21st with Jessie Collier, Freya Higginbottom and Rebecca Rourke filling the places from 24th to 26th with Mary Lammas 31st, Alice Brown in 35th and Morgan Romain one place back.

The Under 17 Boys also bagged second place thanks to Sam Atkins in 9th, Lewis Debenham 12th, with 19th placed Jack Rice and Oliver Bath in 28th ensuring a full complement.

Molly Sweetman’s superb victory for Under 15 Girls led the squad to third place in the team standings as Grace Dukelow (11th), Lily Bath (13th) and Kate Walker (24th) were the scoring four with five other club members in action - Charlotte Wright (27th), Katie Rafferty (30th), Lucy Priestley (33rd), debutant Angelica Thomson in 34th with 37th placed Jessica James completing the line-up.

The Under 15 Boys mustered 10 runners but it wasn’t enough for a top three finish. Harry Jones ran well for 7th place with an under-the-weather Alex Friend in 28th, Dominic Jarvis (41st) &  Ben Naish (44th) the scorers in the team which placed fifth. Also in action were Henry Lay (48th), newcomer Louis Berrett (50th), Matthew Edwards one place back, with good packing from Jake Long (52nd), Henry Chaplin (53rd) and Edoardo Sonzogni in 56th.  The Senior Women’s quartet of Jo Sullivan (39th), Juliet Ward (66th) Jane Hallam in 69th and Tracy O'Neill (75th) the scoring four who placed third in their division.
