Essex Cross Country League, Round 2, Hylands Park, Chelmsford, 29 October 2016

Havering athletes continued their strong start to the Essex League season after three team wins, an individual victory and three runners up placings as Chelmsford hosted the second fixture at Hylands Park on Saturday.

The Under 17 Girls / Under 20 women made it two wins out of two and had the biggest club turn out in this age group for years, with nine athletes taking part. Chelmsford's International Khai Mhlanga once again took the individual honours and Jess Mitchell was first club athlete home in runners up spot, turning the tables on fourth placed Kate O'Neill. Sophie Rand's 13th place and Catherine Barker in 23rd ensured a three point winning margin over the hosts. With Amelia Day and Georgia Phillips 29th and 30th, Emily James (33rd), Emily Crane (37th) and Anna Osborne (40th) it was a promising day for the club.

The Under 13 Girls went one better than last time to win the team stakes. Sydney Foley was again runner up to Basildon’s Abigail Ives to lead home the 13 strong Havering squad, and Chloe Rand was again 7th, with Holly Hagan 11th on her debut and Hannah Yexley (16th) completing the scoring four who gave Havering a comfortable win to move to the top of the league table. Hannah Johnson, Rebecca O'Rourke and Rose Mears occupied 21st to 23rd places with Maddie Barker, Alice Atkins and Jessie Collier all in the top 30 and Mary Lammas, Isobelle O'Connor and Morgan Romain completing the line up.

Molly Sweetman once again took the individual honours for the Under 15 Girls and was well supported by her team mates, as the squad took the team honours and a share of the league leadership, in a three-way fight with Basildon & Chelmsford. Lily Bath (7th) Grace Dukelow (10th), and Poppy Ellis (13th) made up the winning quartet with six other runners closing in with Rosie Brown in 15th, Molly Bath 26th, Kate Walker in 29th) and Chloe Morter, Charlotte Wright and Jessica James also supporting the cause.

Although the Senior Men were knocked off the top spot in the league, Rob Warner's great start to the cross country season continued as another powerful run brought him home in second place. Under 20 Ben Davis ran well against very strong opposition in 14th while Steve Rand 27th and Paul Grange 35th both made the top forty. Another Under 20 Euan Harlow placed 50th with another impressive run, just in front of Martin Chester (67th) who completed the fourth placed scoring team. Two more Under 20 James Stewart 75th and Kieran O'Hara 100th proved their worth to the team and they were followed home by Gary Atkins 106th, Richard Rowe 120th and U20 Aidan Elmore 123rd who all competed well. The squad was completed by Graham Hogan 142nd, Tony Collins 160th, Darren Priestley 179th while late-arriving Alfie Waithaka gave everyone a ten minute start but still came home in 196th place.

The Under 13 boys had to settle for third as Southend dominated. Round 1 winner Alex Ford placed fifth this time while Matthew Blacklock was 10th, as Sam Bradley (25th) and Oliver Yexley (29th) were the other scorers. Lenny Houston placed 31st, Timi McDaniel and Joseph Baxter were 38th & 39th and Jim Monaghan was the eighth club finisher.

The Under 15 Boys repeated their fourth place finish from round one but were only edged out from third by one point. Alex Friend was first home in 11th, with Ollie Woods  in 15th with Dominic Jarvis an improved 35th and Louis Berrett (38th) the scorers. Jake Long and Peter Brinton-Quinn also flew the flag.

The Under 17 Boys were one short of a scoring four despite god efforts from Sam Atkins and Lewis Debenham in 16th and 17th and Oliver Bath in 31st . The Senior Women’s quartet once again placed third in their division thanks to Jo Sullivan (47th), Jane Hallam in 65th, Juliet Ward (73rd) and Tracy O'Neill (95th).

With the top five finishers from Essex clubs gaining county selection for the Inter Counties match at Oxford on 10th December congratulations go to Sydney Foley (U13G), Molly Sweetman (U15G), Jess Mitchell & Kate O'Neill (U17), Alex Ford (U13B) and Rob Warner (senior).
