Essex Cross Country League, Round 1, Horseheath Race Course Cambridge, 28 October 2017

The club's Essex Cross Country League campaign got off to a strong start with three team victories and an individual win at a chilly Horseheath Racecourse outside Cambridge on Saturday. And with the top seven in each young athlete age group earning an Essex call up for the Southern Inter Counties fixture later this year the club will be well represented in the Essex line ups.

The victory roll started in the first event of the day for Under 13s and was wrapped up in style in the last race by the Senior men. Stephanie Okoro marked her league debut with runners up spot in the Under 13 Girls: competition and strong support from Chloe Rand in 7th, earning Essex selection, and two more debutants Tilly Canty (9th) and Freya Long (16th) gave the squad a 19 point cushion over the hosts Cambridge. Six other club athletes competed as Maddie Barker (21st), Kate Ruane (21st); Ava Haythorn (35th), Holly Bradley (40th), Isabelle Bartlett (42nd) and Ruby Lendon in 46th completed the10-stromg line-up.

The Under 13 Boys' event, run alongside the girls', also brought an individual win for Matthew Blacklock who finished almost 100m clear o the field. Shane Hart was a fine fifth, and Alex Kerr (25th) & Joseph Baxter (26th) completed the scoring four in runners-up team spot and Joshua Lee-Prime, Archie Winney and Ryan McCarthy all finished in the top 40.

The Under 17 Girls / Under 20 women took an impressive step to defending their league title which saw their scoring four all in the top seven to gain Essex selection. Jess Mitchell was almost a minute clear at the head of the field and Kate O’Neill (3rd); Molly Sweetman (6th) and Sophie Rand (7th) completing the team domination. Grace Dukelow led home the other five club finishers in 16th and Lucy Priestley, Emily James, Amelia Day and Georgia Phillips finished between 33rd & 41st. 

Sydney Foley stepped up effortlessly into the Under 15 Girls age group with a superb runner up spot, earning her Essex vest. Alice Brown (16th), Lily Bath (21st) and an improved Morgan Romain (25th) were the third placed scoring quartet, with Rebecca O'Rourke (28th), Jessie Collier (35th), Alice Atkins and Jessica James providing support.

The Senior Women had their best season opener for while with a second place team finish, as Faye Fullerton took individual runners up spot. Ginte Bailey made an impressive league debut in 12th and Robyn Matson's 18th place and Jo Sullivan's 38th completed the scorers.  Jade Edwards returned to club colours in 45th and five others made it a ten athlete finish thanks to Angie Thompson (56th), Juliet Ward (76th), Clare Rudgely (90th), Alex Edwards (91st) and Tracy O'Neill (99th).

There were fifth place finishes for the Under 15 Boys and Under 17 Men. Sam Atkins and Alex Friend finished together in 12th & 13th for the Under 17s, with Oliver Woods (22nd) and Louis Berrett (35th) ensured a full scoring quartet.26:23.

Alex Ford's first Under 15 outing saw him first home for the club in 16th with Luke Chester (28th), Sam Bradley (34th) and Jake Long (39th) the other scorers. Also in action were Dominic Jarvis (40th), James Bartlett & Timi McDaniel in 46th & 47th with Reece Debenham and Henry Lay 53rd & 54th.

The day ended, just as it has started, with another victory, this one for the Senior Men who carried on their fantastic start to the season with a league victory. Another good turnout of 17 runners was led home by Under 20 Ben Davis with a great run in sixth, followed home by strong running Rob Warner in eighth. Paul Grange kept up the momentum with a good 15th with James Stewart showing his potential in 24th, with Steve Rand 27th and Alfie Waithaka 30th completed the the scoring team in a strong field. Matt Bland 51st, Freddie Keefe 59th and Steven Dukelow 60th will be contesting a scoring place in the next round, while Martin Chester 65th, Kieran O'Hara 73rd, Lewis Debenham 74th, and Gary Atkins 95th, all finished in the top 100. The impressive roster was completed by John Whitehead 102nd, Aidan Elmore 126th, Paul Berrett 145th and Barry Ward 204th on a day which saw several athlete making their senior league debuts.
