Essex Cross Country League, Round 2, Hockley, 25 November 2017

Clubs teams shrugged off the fixture clashes which saw several regulars compete in the English Schools Cup final and the Liverpool Challenge to show impressive strength in depth to record a fine set of results in the second round of the Essex Cross Country League at Hockley on Saturday.

The Under 17 Girls / Under 20 women once again led the way with another dominant win to extend their lead in the league. Kate O’Neill was victorious with a cushion of over 20 seconds over her rivals and third placed Molly Sweetman, 10th placed Sophie Rand and Grace Dukelow in 13th completed the strong scoring four. Catherine Barker, Lucy Priestley and Kate Walker occupied 26th to 28th positions and Katie Rafferty, Angelica Thompson, Chloe Morter and Amelia Day all placed between 30th & 35th as 11 club athletes took part.

Matthew Blacklock repeated his round 1 victory in the Under 13 Boys' event, also finishing 20 seconds ahead. He was well supported by Callum Basinger in 10th, debutant Lewis Edwards (13th) and Harry Cossington one place back as the squad finished runners up. Newcomers James Tudor and Oliver Shead were 30th and 32nd. A second place finish kept the squad joint top of the league.

The Under 13 Girls made light of the absence of three key athletes to place second and retain their top of the table position. Although missing three of their last Essex league scoring team, the Senior Men had another great turnout, which was matched by an equally great second place, which kept the team top of the league table. The 17 athletes were led home by Rob Warner with another strong run in third, while Paul Grange achieved his first Essex league top ten with a fine run in seventh, closely followed by Jamie Buckley-Stanton in a very good 11th. James Stewart kept up his impressive start to the season in 20th, with Stephen Dukelow 41st and Matt Bland 42nd completing the scoring team. Lewis Debenham 50th ran well leading a group of more experienced runners, Martin Chester 52nd, John Whitehead 53rd and Ian Anthony 55th. Kieran O'Hara 67th, Graham Hogan 88th and Steve Walker 100th all made the top one hundred, and the squad was completed by Richard Rowe 122nd, Paul Berrett 126th, Aidan Elmore 137th and Tony Collins 167th.

The Senior Women matched their second place n the opening round. Birmingham based Vicky Smith made the trip south worthwhile with her 8th place finish, and with Ginte Bailey (13th), Debbie Appleton (14th) and 18th placed Robyn Matson all in the top 20 the squad earned third. Clare Davies was 33rd in a rare cross country outing, Jade Edwards improved to 35th and Jo Sullivan was 40thg, with Toni Marshall (83rd), Clare Rudgley (97th) and Tracy O'Neill (103rd) also flying the flag

The Under 15 Girls were affected by absences as none of their scoring four from round 1 were available.
