Essex Cross Country League, Round 4, Writtle, 13 January 2018

Havering athletes bagged four individual wins and two team victories at the fourth round of the Essex Cross Country League held at a sticky Writtle College on Saturday.

Matthew Blacklock's third consecutive victory in the Under 13 Boys' event means that he has won the individual league title with one round to spare. Shane Hart (11th), Alex Kerr (15th) and Callum Basinger (17th) completed the scoring four who placed second, with five others competing as Harry Cossington (26th), debutant Max Robbins (28th) and Ryan McCarthy, Archie Winney and James Tudor finishing close up between 36th and 39th.

Jess Mitchell's win in the Under 17/20 Women's event puts her in line for the individual title and barring disasters in the final round the team should also lift the league title. With three of the usual four scorers absent it was left to Catherine Barker in 13th and Lucy Priestley (17th) to bring the team home third.

It's been many years since the Senior Men had an Essex League winner but cometh the hour cometh the man and Rob Warner was that man. After missing last week's county championships with an ankle injury Rob only ran because the team were short of some of their top runners. Warner was sixth after a cautious first lap, gradually working his way to the front, and winning by an impressive margin. The win also took Warner to the top of the individual rankings.

Paul Grange had another good run in seventh just in front of a shoeless James Stewart in 10th . The sticky mud caused more footwear problems to the next Havering athlete Jason Lendon finishing in 15th with half of his shoe ripped off. Matt Bland was next home in a season's best in 22nd and the scoring team was completed by Freddy Keefe in 50th. A succession of Havering athletes followed in close order with John Whitehead in 54th , Kieran O'Hara 55th , Martin Chester 56th and Lewis Debenham 60th . Steve Walker improved on his last outing in 78th m with Paul Berrett 103rd followed by Richard Rowe 129th, Roy James 136th, Darren Priestley 146th, Tony Collins 156th, and Barry Ward 171st completed the seventeen strong men's team. Havering's win in the veteran's competition  saw the go top of the veteran's standings, after league leaders Colchester slipped up in sixth.

The Under 13 girls top the table after their second place finish at Writtle but need to beat Chelmsford to in the league title. Chloe Rand headed the squad in fourth with Stephanie Okoro, Tilly Canty and Maddie Barker in close order from seventh to ninth. Freya Long (14th), Heidi Aylen (29th) and Sophia Stephanou (38th) also competed.

Sydney Foley's first league victory took her to joint first in the Under 15 girls' standings. Rebecca O'Rourke (20th), Annie Grannell (26th)and 28th placed Morgan Romain made up the third placed quartet.  Luke Chester was first home for the Under 15 boys in 10th with Dominic Jarvis (18th), Henry Lay (22nd) and Lenny Houston in 25th again placing the team fourth. Louis Berrett in 24th and Matthew Edwards in 29th were the Under 17 Men in action.

Ginte Bailey's 10th place for Senior Women was her best to date with Debbie Appleton's 16th taking her to second in the individual W45 stakes.Jade Edwards in 28th and Jo Sullivan (36th) were the other scorers. Toni Marshall (71st), Juliet Ward (80th), Alex Edwards (82nd), team manager Jane Hallam in 91st and 95th placed Tracy O'Neill ensured a bumper turn out.

The league and individual title will be awarded at the final fixture at Basildon's Gloucester Park on 10th February.
