Essex Cross Country League, Round 1, Hockley, Saturday 27th October 2018

The club teams got their Essex Cross Country League programme off to a strong start with three team and two individual victories at a wintry Hockley on Saturday. Essex selection which was on offer for the top six finishers in each young athlete age group ensured a competitive series of races.

The Senior Men picked up they left off last season when they started their title defence with a victory. A stunning run from fit-again Jamie Buckley-Stanton led the way with a superb second place, just ahead of third placed Rob Warner, who took the individual title last year. Under 20s Ben Davies in sixth and Sam Atkins in eighth both made the top ten, an excellent first senior outing for Atkins Good runs from Paul Grange in 14th and James Stewart (25th) completed the scoring six who were almost 50 points clear of runners up Southend.

Steve Rand in 37th was one place in front of a much improved Freddy Keefe, followed by a group in close order as John Whitehead, Robbie Cooman, Barry Smith and Gavin Maley placed between 44th and 50th. Martin Chester, Graham Hogan, Kieran O'Hara, Steve Walker and Gary Atkins all made the top hundred and Graham Pritchard, Tony Collins and Roy James brought the Havering contingent to 20.

There was a bonus victory for the Veteran Men as the placings of Steve Rand, Barry Smith; Gavin Maley and Martin Chester ensured a comfortable win.

Alex Ford's fine individual victory set the scene for a team win in the Under 15 Boys' race, as Matthew Blacklock in fourth, Charlie Howell a fine seventh and Oliver Jones, 11th on his debut, gave the squad victory over a strong Southend challenge. Sam Bradley was 18th, as Shane Hart, a much improved Jack Thomson and Lenny Houston were in close order from 26th to 28th, with Lewis Edwards 34th. (26th
