Essex Cross Country League, Round 2, One Tree Hill, Saturday 10th November 2018

With 18 young athletes away competing for their school teams at the Regional Schools Cup at Woodbridge this second round Essex League fixture looked difficult for club teams but all concerned rose to the occasion to make it another excellent day at the races.

With six athletes at Woodbridge, including their scoring four from round 1, the Under 15 Girls seemed to have their work cut out but they responded superbly to claim victory as Holly Bradley, Isobelle O'Connor and Maddie Barker packed well from 7th to 9th, and Annie Grannell's 12th sealed victory over Thurrock. Hannah Yexley (15th), Ella Burgess (19th) and Morgan Romain (34th) confirmed the club's strength in depth.

Both senior teams won, with the Senior Women's win being the first for several years. Ginte Bailey was an excellent runner up, and Morgan Campbell also impressive in sixth, as Debbie Appleton (11th) and Clare Davies (19th) brought the team home in front of Southend. Bella Woods (20th), Jo Sullivan (43rd) and Angie Thompson (72nd) completed the line up.

The Senior Men kept up their remarkable run of success with another great first place to put them in as strong position to defend their league title.  They were led home by Rob Warner's excellent second place - which was a good warm up for his England debut in next week's home Master's International. Rob was followed home by Jamie Buckley-Stanton with another very good run in third and UNder 20 Sam Atkins who had another fantastic run in fifth. James Stewart improved to take a superb 10th place not far in front of Paul Grange's strong run in 13th.  A good run by John Whitehead in 43rd completed the scoring team, and he was closely followed home by Barry Smith in 44th , Freddy Keefe 56th , Martin Chester 65th , Tony Pecoraro 70th and Robbie Cooman 74th all competed well and helped push the other teams further back. Graham Hogan 96th and Steve Walker 99th both made the top one hundred, and the squad of seventeen was completed by Rob Dickenson 143rd , Richard Rowe 144th Roy James 150th and Tony Collins 171st.

The Under 15 Boys were missing three including round one winner Alex Ford but Matthew Blacklock and Charlie Howell responded brilliantly to come home first and second, and Lewis Edwards (20th) and 22nd placed Timi McDaniel completed the second placed team, with Jack Thomson 27th

The Under 13 Girls were again second to the strong Chelmsford squad. Tilly Canty got the better of Ruby Higgins as the pair placed fourth and fifth and excellent runs from Hannah Evans (8th) & Lucy Bacon (14th) in their second club performances were the scorers as Kate Ruane, Heidi Aylen and Charlotte Kennedy placed 26th-28th with Charlotte Grundy 37th

There was a fourth place finish for the Under 13 Boys as Ryan Carroll led them home in 6th, with Charlie Burgess 11th, with Finley Wolton in 23rd and 32nd placed Alex Cordery-Smith the other scorers and Oliver Jarvis 35th.

The Under 17/20 Women had a full scoring four thanks to Catherine Barker, Amelia Day, Katie Rafferty and Jessica James who finished between 23rd and 29th to place fourth but the Under 17/20 Men had just two runners as Harry Jones (6th) and Luke Chester (29th) flex the club flag.

The third round takes a trip out of county on 15th December as Cambridge & Coleridge are hosts at Horseheath Point-to-Point course.
