Essex Cross Country League, Round 4, Epping Forest, Saturday 12th January 2019

Club teams gave another strong showing at round 4 of the Essex Cross Country League at Epping Forest on Saturday as a fourth successive win for the Senior men ensured that they retained their title a one round spare.

A superb victory from Grant Twist helped the Senior men maintain their dominance in the league with a fourth consecutive team victory, which means they only have to turn up in the final fixture to defend their title. Grant led from the off to build up an impressive gap which had stretched to 48 seconds by the finish.   Rob Warner had another good run to place third, and shares the lead in the individual standings wit Colchester Ramadhan Osman, while Ben Davis' fine fourth sees  him top of the Under 20 table. Jamie Buckley-Stanton ran well to come home eleventh, and James Stewart (21st) and Paul Grange (24th) completed the scoring four. Gavin Watts finished 27th before flying back for active service overseas, as Barry Smith took 43rd just in front of a club quartet in close order, Gavin Maley, John Whitehead, Rob Trevor  and Martin Chester finished between 56th and 61st, while Tony Pecoraro (79th) and Kieran O'Hara in 84th made the top one hundred. The 18-strong squad was rounded off by Steve Walker 101st, Darren Priestley 142nd, Roy James 154th and Tony Collins 173rd.

The Senior women will take a narrow lead into the final fixture after finishing second as they finished on equal points with Southend but lost out on count back based on the position of their fourth scorer. Debbie Appleton led the team home in fifth and is heading for the individual W45 age group title as Morgan Campbell equalled her best league placing in sixth. Robyn Matson in 13th and Clare Davies in 24th completed the four scorers with Jo Sullivan (31st), Jade Edwards (45th) and Tracy O'Neill (73rd) also competing.

A fourth consecutive second place for the Under 13 Girls confirmed they will take runners up spot in the table. Stephanie Okoro (5th), Ruby Higgins (6th) and Tilly Canty (8th) made the top 10, while Hannah Evans got the better of twin Charlotte in 14th and 15th, with Charlotte Kennedy 25th and Ruby Lendon 33rd.

Will all four of their  usual scoring quartet away on Coopers School action the Under 15 Girls were always going to struggle but the club's strength in depth saw six finishers as Maddie Barker was 14th, Nicole Langan one place back on her debut and Hannah Yexley and Holy Bradley 21st and 22nd. Annie Grannell (29th) and Morgan Romain (33rd) completed the line up,

Second place for the Under 13 Boys means that they will battle it out for the title with joint league leaders Chelmsford. With all four scorers in the top 12 as Nathan Hart and Ryan Carroll were fifth and sixth and Charlie Burgess and Owen Fisher 11th and 12th. A ten-strong turn-out saw six other finishers as Seb Alexandru, Toby Johnson and Finley Wolton filled 18th to 20th places, with Joshua Lee-Prime in 25th,  Max Robbins 31st and James Tudor (40th).

Alex Ford's third victory means that he has to beat team mate Charlie Howell, who was again second, to lift the Under 15 Boys title. With Shane Hart sixth and Sam Bradley in 22nd the team were again second and although at the top of the table Southend are better placed to take the title, having won three matches, with their worst results dropped at the end of the season. Dan Peters and Lenny Houston with25th & 26th, with Lewis Edwards 28th and Jack Thomson 31st.

The only disappointment on a fine day was that the club could only muster one representative in each Under 17 race as Jessica James and Louis Berrett both placed 18th in their respective races.

The five-fixture season concludes at Basildon's Gloucester Park on Saturday 2nd February.
