Essex Cross Country League, Round 3, Writtle, Saturday 14th December 2019

Havering teams are in pole position in six of the ten age categories after another strong showing at the third round of the Essex Cross Country League at a very challenging and muddy course at Writtle College on Saturday.

The Senior Ladies are firmly on course to retain their league title after a comfortable win to go well clear in the table. Lydia Hallam celebrated her Christmas vacation from her studies at New Mexico University to win by over a minute from Morgan Campbell and Ginte Bailey's fourth place meant three in the top four and Debbie Appleton's 16th saw the team home 50 points ahead of the rest.  Clare Davies (25th), Jade Edwards (40th), Jo Sullivan (51st and 75th placed Tracy O'Neill completed the line up. The unbeaten squad are almost home and dry only needing one solid result to defend their title.

Both Under 15 teams also remain unbeaten and are also odds on to win the league.  The Under 15 Girls were again victorious with four in the top 10 and six in the top 12. Natalie Sewell had her best result for some time in runners up, as did Maddie Barker in sixth, and Ruby Higgins (seventh) and Tilly Canty (10th) secured the spoils with Nicole Langan and Hannah Yexley 11th and 12th. Freya Long in 22nd and Ruby Lendon in 41st completed the line-up. The Under 15 Boys won on countback from Chelmsford as both teams finished on 27 points. Like the U15 girls they had six in the top 15. County medallist Charlie Howell was runner up, with Matthew Blacklock again fourth with a much improved Max Robbins 10th and Shane Hart 11th. Owen Fisher, Finley Wolton, Charlie Burgess and Dan Peters were in the top 20 and Lewis Edwards and Archie Winney also contributed.

The Senior Men although missing some key athletes kept up their challenge to retain the league trophy after finished close behind Ilford in a good second place. Rob Warner led the the team home in a great season's best in third place with James Stewart not far behind with a very good run to take ninth. Gavin Watts 14th and Sam Atkins 16th both ran well in the blustery conditions, while Barry Smith 28th and Steve Rand 32nd improved on their last outing to complete the scoring team. John Whitehead 44th and Matt Bland 48th both made the top fifty with Rob Trevor 61st , Tony Pecoraro 90th and Steve Walker 100th all making the top one hundred. Roy James 129th and Tony Collins 164th completed the squad.

The Under 13 Boys were edged out by Southend but retain the league leadership abut are coming under pressure from Southend. . Ryan Carroll,. Oliver Taylor-Bush and Toby Johnson occupied 9th to 11th places and Zack Higgins in 21st completed the scorers. Alfie Geeves, Daniel Lammas and Joseph Gray were in the top 30 and Waleed Kabuye also saw action.

The Under 13 Girls look set for runners up spot after Chelmsford's third win confirmed them as favourites for the title. again. Charlotte Evans was an excellent second with Abigail Swan in ninth, with Ruby Tillson (16th) and Rosie Warner in 18th the other scorers and Hannah Evans in 22nd

Sydney Foley was fourth in the Under 17 Girls / Under 20 women race as the team were again third. Morgan Romain (19th), Emily James (21st) and Annie Grannell (23rd) were the scorers with Jessica James, Rebecca O'Rourke and Angelica Thomson between 25th and 28th. The Under 17 Men were again short-handed as Alex Ford was seventh and Lenny Houston and Jack Thomson 24th & 25th.

The fourth round of the league on Saturday 11th January at Colchester's Hilly Fields is likely to confirm several league titles with one round to spare, but before then the Under 17s, Under 20 and Seniors open the second half of the winter season with their County Championships at Basildon on Saturday 4th January.
