Essex Schools Championships - Chelmsford Saturday 11th June 2016

Club athletes achieved some fine results for Havering & other district teams in Saturday’s Essex Schools’ Championships at Chelmsford.

Max Law tops the National javelin rankings by over 12 metres so a win in the county competition was only to be expected and he did not disappoint with a 61.08m winning throw in the junior boys’ event, his second longest ever, to add over five metres to the championship best. He now travels to the English Schools championships in Gateshead next month as clear favourite to retain his title and improve the championship best performance of 61.28m.

There were also two gold & silver medal winning results in the throwing events.  In the junior girls’ discus both Rosie Brown, who struck gold and training partner Robyn Moody, who won silver are both Gateshead bound. Another Havering one-two came in the Intermediate Girls’ shot where Elysha Thatcher-Gray took gold, ahead of club-mate Philippa Gill.

There were three track golds. JJ Morris improved his best for the third consecutive week, clocking 23.71s to win the junior boys’ 200m title to rank in the club all-time U15 top 10, while Molly Sweetman won her first county title with a gold-medal winning performance in the junior girls’ 800m improving her best by a huge five second margin. And John Fennessey added a third gold in the Inter Boys’ steeplechase.

More track success came in the hurdles.  In the junior girls’ sprint hurdles Grace Newson ran the race of her life to get the better of Millie Hodges to win silver in a new PB, while Millie, who had also smashed her best in her heat with the second fastest time ever by a club U15, clipped a hurdle in the final and had to settle for bronze. However, Millie’s swift heat result was a National Standard which earned her Gateshead selection while Grace unluckily just missed out. In the Intermediate hurdles Mayi Hughes’ PB took silver in the girls’ 300m hurdles event and she has been selected for Gateshead to contest the triple jump, in which she recently set a club record, while Kieran Riddell similarly bettered his best for Inter boys’ 400m hurdles silver.

The improving Jade Kavanagh’s dip for the line won her a deserved silver in the junior girls’ 100m, while two more medals came in the Inter girls’ 1500m as Jess Mitchell trimmed her PB by almost four seconds to win silver and a hay-fever affected Kate O’Neill took bronze – both have another year in the age group.

The medal tally was completed by two more bronzes as Adelaide Thatcher-Gray (junior girls’ javelin) and Joseph Hogan-O’Neill’s (junior boys’ shot) both made the podium.
