Essex Schools Championships - Chelmsford Saturday 10th June 2017

Club athletes achieved some brilliant results at Chelmsford on Saturday claiming 23 Essex Schools’ Championship medals and setting two new Championship Best Performances and club records.

Lola Kuponiyi added over a metre to her previous best to win junior girls’ shot gold, setting a new championship best and achieving the English Schools’ National standard to win selection for the national schools championships. Her throw of 12.26m was not only a club Under 15 record but it set a new club mark for the Under 17 age group as well.

Mayi Hughes had already guaranteed English Schools selection with her club Under 17 triple jump record earlier this season but victory at Chelmsford in a new Championship best and club record of 12.03m now puts her in the frame for a national medal. Her jump was even more impressive as it was achieved into a strong headwind.

Club athletes made it a clean sweep of the Inter Girls’ middle distance golds as Molly Sweetman added the county schools’ 800m title to her county clubs’ gold, Jess Mitchell made no mistake in the 1500m with a comfortable victory, and has been selectedfor the 3000m in the National Championships. At Chelmsford Kate O’Neill battled the strong winds to win 3000m gold, with Sophie Rand winning bronze.

There were two javelin golds as Max Law did not disappoint with victory in the junior boys’ event, and Bradley James succeeded Max as the Junior Boys’ champion. Both have the National selection standard and have been selected for the Schools' event.

There were also two gold & a silver medal winning results in the discus.  In the junior girls’ discus Robyn Moody stepped up from silver last year, and as expected has received English schools’ selection, as has Alice Brown, who won silver who received the selectors’ nod. Last year’s junior girls’ discus winner Rosie Brown stepped up to win the Inter Girls’ event. More throws medals came in the Intermediate Girls’ shot where Philippa Gill improved her best for silver, edging club mate Alex Adeniji into bronze – both bettered the old club record, but Lola Kuponiyi had thrown even further in the junior event. Ejiro Akpotor won junior shot silver and Adelaide Thatcher-Gray completed a successful day for the throwers with junior girls’ javelin silver

JJ Morris came close to gold clocking 23.66s to miss out on Inter boys’ 200m title by .05 secs and Kimathi Christie ran the second fastest time ever by a club Under 15 in winning junior boys’ 300m bronze. More track success came in the hurdles as Grace Newson ran well to win silver in the Intermediate 80m hurdles while Ruby Mace overcame a poor start to snatch junior 75m hurdles bronze.

More podium places came in the jumps. Sophie White won Inter Girls’ high jump silver, Jess Collier & Alice Atkins won junior girls’ vault silver & bronze and Tobi Idowu smashed his best for Inter boys’ long jump bronze.
