Essex Schools Championships - Chelmsford Saturday 9th June 2018

The class of 2018 graduated in style as club athletes won 25 medals, 15 of them gold, as fine weather brought out some excellent results at the Essex Schools Championships at Chelmsford on Saturday.

UK Number 1 Max Law improved his own championship best to win the Intermediate javelin and Lola Kuponiyi, who is also top ranked nationally, broke the junior girls shot record she set last year on her way to gold. Bradley James threw beyond 60m again to win the junior javelin, and Freya Killilea's PB won the junior discus. All have won win English Schools’ selection after reaching the National standard while Alex Adeniji will hope to join them after throwing close to her best for bronze in the Intermediate shot, having already made the National mark. More throws success came from Ejiro Akpotor who won the junior boys' discus and Adelaide Thatcher-Gray who was inter girl's javelin runner up.

Toby Bishop's PB won him the junior hurdles title and English Schools’ selection, while Ruby Mace received the selectors' verdict after winning silver in the junior girls’ equivalent. Richard Akinyebo won gold in the inter boys' 100m in a new best and Reece Harriott's PB won him the inter 400m title. Poppy Ellis added the Essex Schools' inters 300m title to her county gold, and Jade Kavanagh won silver in the 200m in the same age group. Uche Okpalauko took junior 300m silver, as team mate Olivia Boachie was just behind in bronze, both in new PBs.

There were high jump golds for Aaron Eweka who won the junior event in a National Standard to ensure selection, while Jamal Thomas won the intermediate event.  Jessie Collier won the junior pole vault, and Tayllah Barton-Conde and Freya Higginbottom won gold & silver in the junior long jump.

Alice Brown was a comfortable winner in the junior 800m to book her English Schools' place, while Molly Sweetman won the inter 1500m. Natalie Sewell smashed her best in winning junior 1500m silver and Louis Berrett set new career marks for silver in the inter 'chase, both in close finishes.

The club can be optimistic of having its biggest group of English Schools’ representatives when the county squads are announced in coming weeks, after those in the senior (Under 20) age group, who don't compete in these championships, are added to the mix.
