Essex Young Athletes Road Relays, Colchester Sunday 25 March 2001

Havering Mayesbrook's young athletes braved the bitterly cold conditions to bring back one gold and two silvers in the team events in the Essex Young Athletes Road Relays at Colchester on Sunday.

The Under 13 girls trio of Vicky Smith, Leanne O'Neill and Megan Foley were easy winners of the team gold, showing no ill effects from the absence of Charlotte Watkins and Robyn Matson. Vicky Smith's opening leg of 12m 16 secs saw her trail B team lead runner Lauren Clark (12:01). A good leg by Leanne O'Neill in 11:55 secs was nevertheless not good enough to peg back the B squad as Katie Richardson's 11:50 effort - third fastest of the day - saw both HMAC teams set off in front. B team anchor runner Robyn Delivett ran well in 12:10 but not surprisingly was unable to hold a flying Megan Foley at bay as Megan came home in 10:41 - almost exactly one minute faster than any other under 13 and faster than any under 15 runner. The HMAC u13 girls' teams deservedly won gold and silver, while two other HMAC teams took part.

The under 17 girls were also among the medals as Faye Powell (11:55) and Laura O'Neill (11:45) set up last leg runner Lauren Deadman who scorched round in 10:18 overtaking the Chelmsford athlete to bring the HMAC team home in second place. Lauren's run brought her the individual gold for the fastest leg in the Under 17 age group. The under 15 girls' team (Lynsey Clark 12:23; Rosie Saunders 11:20; and Natalie Adams 11:45) were just out of the prizes in fourth, the same position as the boys' u13 team (Paul Andrews 11:04; Chris Newton 11:34; and Martyn Chambers 11:49) and u17 team (Andy Hunter 9:59; Paul Jones (10:07) and Michael Meehan 11:16).
