Havering Athletic Club 50th Anniversary Fun Day
Hornchurch Monday 7th May 2018
The hottest early May Bank holiday for years provided the perfect setting for the club’s 50th Anniversary celebrations at Hornchurch Stadium on Monday.
Club members past and present and their families turned up to enjoy the day’s events which saw six mixed ability teams, each of 26 runners, with ages ranging from 11 to 82, combine to run the marathon distance in the World Marathon Challenge, with the classic marathon 26 mile (42 km) distance covered in 105 ½ laps of the 400m track.
Before the race started a representative of each team paraded the 2012 Olympic torch, which Tony Collins had carried six years ago, for a lap of the stadium.
The marathon relay itself saw Jamie Buckley-Stanton anchor the Black team home in 2 hours 6 mins & 47 seconds, just outside, Mo Farah’s recent British record. Children’s egg and spoon and obstacle races added to the fun, with bouncy castles, face painting and live music making a party atmosphere.
President Kevin White provided boards of displays of old photos, press cuttings and memorabilia which fascinated members, past and present, as a fitting tribute to record 50 great years of club history.
Club chairman Tony Benton said “It was a memorable and enjoyable day and an ideal way to celebrate the successes of the past 50 years since Havering AC came into being through the merger of the former Hornchurch Harriers and Romford AC.
Huge thanks to Jason Lendon who was the driving force and chief organiser for the day and he was fully supported by a fantastic team including Martin Chester, Kevin White, Emily Brown and Susan Wright, plus team managers and many other volunteers who came along to set up and give a hand on the day.”
