CAU Inter Counties Cross Country Championships, Prestwold Hall, Loughborough 10th March 2018

Eleven club athletes endured the challenging muddy conditions to post a series of good results for Essex at the Inter Counties Championships at Loughborough on Saturday. With the wet conditions underfoot resembling what some commentators described as like the Somme, it was hard for athletes and spectators alike so all credit to those who took part.

Ben Davis had his best result in a national event to date in the Under 20 Men race. His great seventh place finish was one place higher than in the recent National race and shows what a developing talent the club has. This had been planned to be the end of Ben’s cross country season but his excellent form has earned him a call up for the Eastern Counties team for the Home Counties International at Nottingham on 24th March. Behind Ben, James Stewart put in a strong run in the very muddy conditions to come home in a good 69th to make the Essex scoring four, who placed fourth.

Kate O'Neill put in another quality result, placing 12th in the Under 17 women's competition to lead home the Essex team. Molly Sweetman was 55th and Sophie Rand placed 116th although she had been very poorly in the run up to the event.

Natalie Sewell continued her good form with 20th in the Under 13 Girls' event as Chloe Rand was 113th, while in the Under 13 Boys' race Matthew Blacklock placed 32nd and first Essex runner home.

In the Senior Men's competition Grant Twist had another good race in conditions that had turned from liquid mud to a thick porridge like surface in the three hours after the end of the first race and Grant too has earned an Eastern Counties call up for the Home Countries match at Nottingham. Rob Warner's 112th place made him the 4th Essex athlete home.
